Delhi's Airport Metro makes you fly, marvel passengers

Yes..Its really world class..However fare is a little on higher side...

Do you really think so!
How much would it cost by a non-airconditioned "Yellow-Black" DLY Taxi from New Delhi Stn to IGI (20km distance)? :azn:
And I am not factoring in the speed and comfort factor at all. Any "Dilli-wallas" care to supply the required information?

If you want something substantially better, get ready to pay more.

Last time I was there, my situation was like this:

I had no money in rupees.
I barely had $50, and the foreign exchange counters refused to exchange it calling it too small to exchange.
When I talked to the taxi driver outside, he told me he is not permitted to drive on cash, rather only on a slip which can be bought from the airport counter (outside).

When I reached the counter, they asked me to fish out 400 rupees.
I explained my situation, and they said they cannot take dollars, and will not allow a taxi outside without the Rs. 400 slip.
I asked them why Rs. 400, I had to go barely 5 kilometers away, to Radisson, Mahipalpur?

They told me it's a flat rate of Rs. 400 whether I go 100 meters, or 100 kilometers within Delhi.

As usual, I knew there must be some way for the cabbie, so I asked him to manage the situation for which I would pay him 100 rupees extra.
He asked me for 300, got another customer in similar situation for 300, and dropped me at the hotel, which I could have literally walked to, had I known the way.

Only those who frequent IGI know what a respite it is to have Aiport Linked Metro.

It was planned with Dwarka Metro, but was scrapped to change it to an exclusive line.

And the rates in Airport Metro are not flat ones, they are Rs. 20 per station, and only 4 stations from Cannaught Place to the Airport.

On yes, it was a Maruti Van, without any AC, and don't know if it had any shockers, didn't feel like it had any.

I must say the Taxi wallahs fooled you buddy. There is no 'fixed charge' of Rs. 400 for taxis in Delhi. Trust me, I live here ;)

I can't comment too much about the problems you had with the taxi guys. My comment was about the response from some people saying that the Metro Fare is high/or a 'bit pricey'. Won't you agree that it is less than the 'metered DLY' taxis not to mention less than the 'pre-paid' taxis.
I am very happy to hear about the Metro connectivity, it will teach those damn taxi and auto guys a lesson. Luckily my exposure to New Delhi is occassional, have to usually disembark at Bombay.

Well, what can I say... I won't mind metro's fare being 400, because it is comfortable and fast.

In fact, I am not very appreciative of the Airport line fare being so cheap.

Probably he means the 'pre-paid' taxis at the airport. They usually charge in slabs. But AFAIK, the slab rates start at Rs. 100 or thereabouts.

Go to Delhi, board a Dwarka/Chandni Chowk Metro line from Cannaught Place during day time. Then, if you survive, come back to this forum, and let us know your experience.

To tell you the truth, living conditions in Indian cities are just as costly as the US, in dollar terms, not even PPP. And people there seem to readily afford that.

A lot of my acquaintances frequent to Cannaught Place from Dwarka, and to save time and avoid crowd, they board the Airport Line everyday, even though there is a much cheaper Dwarka Line that would take them to the same destination.

Trust me, it will start getting so crowded, administration will be forced to increase the fare to make it less crowded for those landing at the IGI airport.
