India misses out on world uni rankings

Is it fair to compare IITs with university of cambridge or oxford.I think all the IITs must be considered as a single entity before comparing with other world class universities. What you think guys

I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but the truth is IITs and Oxford are not in the same class. You can pile up all the Pizza Huts in the world and it still can't compare to Osteria Francescana.

Friend my point is this, by considering all IITs as a single entity you can get a reasonable rank among worldclass universities rather than ranking them individually.Im not saying IITs are better than cambridge or oxford.

despite low rankings of IITs, their graduates are highly competitive in the global labor market.

this is because IITs have extremely rigorous selection criteria. They have lower acceptance rates than Harvard and Stanford. Hell, they have lower acceptance rates than Beijing U. did in 1980's (guessing at 0.8%). Everyone that gets into an IIT then gets out at least has a very high IQ and is a very hard worker. In most jobs, having even 1 of those is enough.

rankings are determined by alot of things, but some things that a school can never improve on are things like alumni quality.

The IIT's have shined in their respective fields, its just they don't have enough mandate to be full fledged universities. For example, in engineering subjects like computer sciences mainland china has 3 universities and India got 4 universities and its same with all engineering disciplines IIT's offer.

IITs are colleges, not universities.

Thank God the world doesn't hinge on you knowing about it or else we'd all be fcked.

Aren't you already?

I totally agree with the article. Indian bros should avoid to blow own trumpet try to understand the reality. IIT is good teaching institution but not vibrant research institute. The ranking is absolutely flawless.

You can't compare IIT and China's University of Electronic Sciences and Technology Chengdu. UEST is a research university that, although it has an emphasis on electronics engineering, also has degrees in things like Japanese literature and business administration.

There's not just 1 school with computer science degrees either. My school Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) though an "engineering school" and focused on also has social science subjects like finance and sociology.

In China, most new universities (not Beijing U. or Tsinghua) came from specialized trade schools established in the 50's. For example, the Wuhan University of Science and Technology came from the Institute of Construction Materials; unsurprisingly, their specialty is in materials science and solid mechanics, but are a full fledged research university in all subjects. My own school was previously the South Central Institute of Power Engineering and Water Conservation but now as a full fledged research university, its new strength is photonics; it manages the Wuhan National Laboratories for Opto-electronics.

Stop arguing guys.

Lets see how many of you went to a top 50 university :P

Its unfair to compare IITs to full fledged universities. When you compare IIT's to different engineering schools, they have better rankings.

Wat u trying to prove? I think u r totally blind abt our institutes and its performance. If u don't abt something don't argue .
