No ammo, air defence obsolete: Army Chief to PM

Largest importer and still no ammo, no critical weapons, IAF obsolete!! I wonder what these guys have been doing so far?
No one's talking about IAF here. I would suggest you read the article next time before passing on your brain farts.

He got revelation only now... been sleeping for some time it seems... Army chief, you can go back to retirement home or play with grand children etc etc.. or go fly kites.

correction......HE is army chief, he never said IAF is obsolete, he is talking about IA.

Oo really since when army has started defending the air space?

In his letter, the Army Chief stated that while there is lack of critical ammunition for the entire tank fleet, the country’s air defence is “97% obsolete and it doesn't give the deemed confidence to protect…from the air”.

If I am reading correct then it says AIR DEFENSE.

Did he refer to missiles, especially intercepting missiles?... If thats the case I am sorry I misinterpret it.. My bad

this is bad how could such a bad condition come to pass where was the defence minister and other top brass surely they would have kept an eye on this. the generals, air marshals if the IAF is running low on ammunition then he should have done something about it and with the tanks the army chief should have known its great he revealed it and all but he was army chief all this time he should have seen this coming and done something about this.......... so who do you think is behind such a huge negligence

NATO defines air defence as "all measures designed to nullify or reduce the effectiveness of hostile air action."[1] They include ground and air based weapon systems, associated sensor systems, command and control arrangements and passive measures. It may be used to protect naval, ground and air forces wherever they are. However, for most countries the main effort has tended to be 'homeland defence'. NATO refers to airborne air defence as counter-air and naval air defence as anti-aircraft warfare. Missile defence is an extension of air defence as are initiatives to adapt air defence to the task of intercepting potentially any projectile in flight.

Army

Armies typically have air defence in depth, from integral MANPADS like RBS 70, Stinger and Igla at smaller force levels up to army-level missile defence systems such as Angara and Patriot. Often, the high-altitude long-range missile systems force aircraft to fly at low level, where anti-aircraft guns can bring them down. As well as the small and large systems, for effective air defence there must be intermediate systems. These may be deployed at regiment-level and consist of platoons of self-propelled anti-aircraft platforms, whether they are self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAGs), integrated air-defence systems like Tunguska or all-in-one surface-to-air missile platforms like Roland or SA-8 Gecko.

The basic air defence unit is typically a battery with 2 to 12 guns or missile launchers and fire control elements. These batteries, particularly with guns, usually deploy in a small area, although batteries may be split; this is usual for some missile systems. SHORAD missile batteries often deploy across an area with individual launchers several kilometres apart. When MANPADS is operated by specialists, batteries may have several dozen teams deploying separately in small sections; self-propelled air defence guns may deploy in pairs.

Batteries are usually grouped into battalions or equivalent. In the field army a light gun or SHORAD battalion is often assigned to a manoeuvre division. Heavier guns and long-range missiles may be in air-defense brigades and come under corps or higher command. Homeland air defence may have a full military structure. For example the UK's AA Command, commanded by a full artillery general was part of ADGB. At its peak in 1941–42 it comprised three AA corps with 12 AA divisions between them.[11]

This is the ARMY Chief talking. NOW Why would he talk about the AF.

My salute the General for his stand against this corrupted and slow moving govt. I love the frustration from Lalu and MSJ. Specially the words of Lalu were pretty amusing. He was telling the Gen to be in his 'limits'..... The man fought war for his country and what Lalu did???

he is slower than tube light... ok lets only blame politicians..for everything

seriously.....what WAS he doing all this while? he should be dishonourably discharged for neglect of duty
Cool it friend. Needless to say, you are unaware of the fact that the Chief had been writing to the Defence Minister and the Defence Secretary regarding these issues since the time he took over as Chief. Neither one did a fig about taking these matters seriously. Keeping India's security interests in mind, he had no other alternative but to write to the Prime Minister.

Your argument therefore is totally biased. The goons who are to be taken to task are the two mentioned above for poodle faking all these years and putting the security of the nation at risk.

Also, who in the PMOs office leaked this letter to the press? He should be hanged too. But you have conveniently glossed over these issues and blamed the Chief instead.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Ever since airspace began to get violated, ever since aircrafts were used in combat. Since at least 1940s. All armies in the world have air defence units. It is an integral part of their duty. The following links are about pakistan army's air defence units.

Ironical as this goof, 'fodder scam Lalu' has eaten fodder meant for the cows amounting to a thousand crores! And he has the gumption to blame the Chief! Jeeez!

It's amazing how this country has produced such jokers. Must be something in the water! :undecided:

@ The Great One, Smarty pants read my elaboration above.. And matter you shared clearly says NATO defines, are you in NATO?

Now read this... Airforce does not only mean aircrafts, it also covers other areas... Read here = Indian Air Force - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

buddy what he meant was that air force comes under the heading of armed forces which is divided into three other sectors one army one navy one air force thats why exercises are done with air and army to get co ordination right

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but non NATO armies also have formidable air defence units. Pakistan army has a school of air defence, as seen in the links I posted.

And not just to defend against missiles, but also low flying aircrafts. In fact I'm pretty sure the army air defences of India and pak are for that alone, to shoot down transgressing aircraft. I doubt if either have the capability to shoot down missiles. At least not the small air defence units on the field. I'm not sure who commands the anti ballistic shields and so on.
