ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has said that Kashmir is not a land dispute between the two states; rather it is the issue concerning over 16 million Kashmiris living on both sides of Line of Control (LoC).

Addressing a function here on Tuesday in connection with Kashmir Solidarity Day‚ he said plebiscite was the right way to give the Kashmiris their right to self-determination. He reiterated Islamabad’s commitment seeking solution to the problem in the light of the United Nations resolutions.

The prime minister said Kashmir was a human rights issue and urged the world community to play its role for its resolution. He said India demonstrated intransigence for resolution of the Kashmir issue and was ruling the occupied valley with brute force.

He said though India wanted to normalise relations with Pakistan and desired to have enhanced trade relations, but he made it loud and clear that the unresolved issue of Kashmir was dangerous for lasting peace in the region and the world.

Ashraf said Kashmiris were struggling for their right to self-determination and this struggle was intensifying day by day.

The prime minister said the objective to observe Kashmir Solidarity Day was to express solidarity with Kashmiris for their right to self-determination. He said support to Kashmir cause was top priority of PPP and it was one of the reasons for creating the party.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said the PPP government inherited terrorism, but contained the genie of terrorism to great extent with the support of the masses and the armed forces of the country.

About the current water dispute with India, the prime minister said that under the Indus Water Treaty, India could not divert the water of rivers to other areas, adding whenever the neighbouring country violated the treaty international forums gave decisions in favour of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, people across the country and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir observed Kashmir Solidarity Day on Tuesday renewing the pledge to support the cause of Kashmir and its people who are met with violence and hostilities from formidable Indian troops all these years.

Rallies, processions and public gatherings were organised across Pakistan in connection with the Kashmir Solidarity Day.

In Islamabad, AJK President Sardar Yaqoob, Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed and prominent Kashmiri leaders, including Syed Yousaf Naseem, Faiz Naqshbandi, Raja Farooq Haider, Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan, Barrister Sultan Mehmood and others, participated in different ceremonies. A resolution was presented in the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) demanding effective UN role for Kashmir’s independence and against the killings of Kashmiris by Indian army in the occupied Valley.

A token sit-in was also staged outside the UNMOGIP office in Diplomatic Enclave but it was called off early due to a heavy downpour on Tuesday.

Like every year, a human chain was formed at the Kohala Bridge.

Kashmiris ‘want to be part of Pakistan’

A roundtable discussion on Kashmir issue titled ‘What should be the role of international community in peaceful settlement of Kashmir?’ was organised here.

Sardar Khalid Ibrahim, senior Kashmiri politician and former ambassador Khalid Mehmood were speakers in the roundtable organised by the Muslim Institute. Research associates of the institute as well as other think-tanks participated in the event.

Sardar Khalid Ibrahim on the occasion said that there is an unfortunate trend in the international media of associating the current unrest with militancy or influence from Pakistan. The reality is that the current resistance and pro-freedom campaign is predominantly a civilian and indigenous movement. It is not militants or terrorists but hundreds of ordinary Kashmiris, from all classes and backgrounds, men, women and children who are taking to the streets to make a democratic stance and to raise their voices against an unjust regime.

‘Go India, Go’ is inscribed on the walls of buildings and on road surfaces throughout Srinagar. Children as young as four, stand beside their parents in the streets calling for freedom. He said that we as Kashmiri people want to be the part of Pakistan. Pakistan should talk with India on equal basis.

Khalid Mehmood, former ambassador, said that according to the logic of partition and relevant precedent, Jammu and Kashmir ought to have gone to Pakistan. No princely state, when all was said and done, remained independent, though a few tried. If we take it for granted, then, that Kashmir could not have become an independent state, it still seems that Pakistan has the better claim to the territory. The population of the state was overwhelmingly Muslim, economic, geographic, and cultural ties seemed to point towards union with Pakistan.

He said that how a country like India can be the member of the Security Council if the India itself is not abiding by the resolutions of the same body. He said that terrorism and genuine freedom movements should not be considered and treaded similarly. He said there should be Kashmir Cell in the Pakistani embassies abroad to keep the issue alive especially the human rights violations in Kashmir.

In the end, participants of the roundtable discussion asked different questions to the speakers regarding history of the Kashmir conflict, various developments regarding the issue as well as approaches and strategies that could be adopted for peaceful settlement of the Kashmir issue.

Tahir Mehmood, programme coordinator, said that according to Alastair Lamb, it seems that Lord Mountbatten, the British viceroy, engineered the partition in such a way that Jammu and Kashmir would go to India. The evidence suggests that Mountbatten meddled with the proceedings of the Radcliffe Commission, whose job was to assign territories to either Pakistan or India.

Kashmiris

Kashmiri don't want to merge with Pakistan. They want

After Imran Khan, PM also making Kashmir statement. Wait...people will still fall for Kashmir vote bank policy.

Even my grandchildren will listen the same Kashmir rhetoric from Bilawal's grandchild when he will become PM. True story, even my grandpa had the same experience, he was a teenage boy in 47.

OK let them decide... or wait who gave Kashimr land to china without asking Kashmiri???

Kashmiri don't want to merge with Pakistan. They want

Says an Indian who is occupying the Indian Occupied Kashmir.

OK let them decide... or wait who gave Kashimr land to china without asking Kashmiri???

This is recent propaganda adopted by "guymata" fan boys....Gilgit baltistan was never a part of kashmir valley and the people there speak a totally different language ..Aksai chin was also part of gilgit-baltistan not kashmir. Valley of kashmir with 97% muslims population is also not a part of ladakh as well...We are not concerned about ladakh all we want is the right of self determination for people of valley of kashmir.

They should Have thought of that when United Nations Resolution 47 was passed . Seems they have woken 65 years too late .

Pakistan has always been for the UN resolution and what Kashmiris want. India on the other hand has occupied Kashmir and continues to rape and kill Kashmiri people.

Even my grandchildren will listen the same Kashmir rhetoric from Bilawal's grandhchild when he will become PM. True story, even my grandpa had the same experience, he was a teenage boy in 47.

You better hope that is the case, you don't want to face children of Kashmir whose mother's and sisters your forces have raped and killed.

Pakistan cant protect its own people and it wants to protect the interests of Kashmiris ??
First learn to protect your own people then talk about protecting others from evil Hegemonic Brahmanic Indian imperials....
This **** happens every time before elections happen and Pakistanis are glad to fall for it...... Seems even IK is the same old Joker.
Radicalist elements who wants to curb freedoms of women and enslave them will NEVER be allowed to have freedom, they should be shot dead ...

I don't Blame you , I blame your education systems which brings forward such sub standard text with a lot of Rhetoric . Pakistan REFUSED to comply with UN Resolution 47 . Read your Own history before Chest thumping . U.N. Dropped Kashmir charter after Pakistan's refusal . Then for next 30 40 years there was no talk of Plebiscite . Now along with Fueling Terrorism they are calling for Plebiscite .

Sorry you wont get anything , Neither here nor on World Stage .

Gilgit-Baltistan was the part of princely state of Kashmir except tiny enclaves of Hunza and Nagar. Like people of so called gilgit baltistan even people of so called AJK are not Kashmiris nor they speak Koshur language.
