Indian PM & Chinese PM - Back-to-back visits to boost India-China ties

India and China are working towards stacking up more confidence building measures (CBMs) during a period of frequent consultations that could lead to the first-ever back-to-back visits by the two Prime Ministers, in coming months.

Both sides are currently finalising details of a visit by the new Chinese Premier, Li Keqiang, to New Delhi. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to visit Beijing later this year, possibly in June.

Chinese Premier Mr. Li’s India trip may even be the new Premier’s first ever overseas visit if dates are worked out for next month.

A CBM with high symbolic value that both governments are working over is a hotline between the two Prime Ministers. This could add to the several CBMs announced or implemented last year in the maritime and land domains.

The year also saw the resumption of military exchanges, an agreement on joint military exercises and the holding of a dialogue on counter-terrorism.

Chinese officials are particularly keen to use Mr. Li’s visit to send a positive signal to India that the new leadership wants to take the ties to “a higher level,” as Mr. Li told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a telephonic conversation shortly after taking over last month. Dr. Singh was one of the first leaders Mr. Li spoke to after he was appointed Premier on March 15 following the session of the National People’s Congress, or Parliament.

This would send a strong message, sources said, on how the new leadership in Beijing, which took over in March following a once-in-ten year leadership change, viewed relations with India as a priority. Mr. Li is also the second-ranked member of the Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee, which is headed by the Chinese President.

Chinese President Mr. Xi extended an invitation to Dr. Singh, which he accepted, following their first meeting last month on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Durban.

India and China have stepped up engagement in the lead-up to the visits by the two Prime Ministers in the hope of achieving concrete outcomes during the two visits that would signal a significant boosting of ties on various fronts, from defence ties to increasing coordination on regional challenges.

Indian Ambassador to China S. Jaishankar will reach New Delhi on Sunday for consultations to lay the groundwork for the visit of Mr. Li.

India and China on Friday also concluded two-day consultations on counter-terrorism and their officials will meet in Beijing on April 18 for the first-ever consultations on Afghanistan. Visits by Defence Minister A.K. Antony and National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon are also on the cards, as is a resumption in defence exercises which are set to be held in China later this year.

The border is currently peaceful. New CBM's can help to maintain this peace and stability on our Southwest border.

LOL, 300 views and not even 1 comment from anyone besides me.

I guess people are more interested in threads about the Indian media complaining that "The Chinese leaders forgot to mention India in one event" which apparently is the end of the Earth.

Of course that is what some get off on.. Anyways this comes a welcome news.

You want some more participation :)

So, China and India are talking Afghanistan guess 2014 seems to present some problems by the threat by Afghan Taliban and the various Pakistani terror groups. Also, for securing the infrastructure and investments funded by China and India.. :)

I am hoping for new agreements between two countries which will send clear message to the world that both countries are equally committed to maintain peace in the region..

@Chinese-Dragon Any idea as to what China's views on the upcoming scenario in Afghanistan is? Will China back Pakistan if it tries another Taliban annexation of Af?

So here, the new Chinese leadership (Xi-Li Administration) wants to take Sino-Indian ties to "a higher level".

India will reject this of course, due to the threatening perception of China in the Indian media. Congress doesn't want to lose votes, etc.

However, the offer was made. And that is the important thing, maybe someone will remember it later.

Nothing special on PDF :)

People are more interested in the sex scandals of Navy officers (26 pages) or in threads like Indian mangoes vs. Pakistani mangoes (+20 pages)

Wouldn't be as pessimistic as that. The offer won't be rejected but yes it will be slowly and carefully vetted. The Americans on the other side are hell bent on having us a each other's throats. We still have use for the Americans, there are still things we intend to take from them, thus the aforementioned slow process.

I'm sure such offers if made are not taken lightly, if that would be the case we would not be talking in the first place.

However, it does not mean also that the threat perception by the Indian Media is all that wrong, even if we spend another 200 billion dollars in say a year all we will be able to achieve is an unbeatable defence against China.

So yeah, we are only looking for a good defence, that IMO is more than fair.

There was a Indo-China military exercise that was going to happen few days back, what happened to that?

i hope india and china will send a clear message to uncle SAM that no need of you,we will take care of our regional stability.
