Can Pakistan and Bangladesh be friends?

You can easily distinguish between a Pakistani and a Bangladeshi. 99% Bangladeshis are dark looking people while most of the Pakistanis are pale white looking.

Stereotypes........The top part of pakistan is cold and so the people there are paler and as you move south and it gets hotter the people get darker.

There are very mixed feelings about Pakistan among Bangladeshis. As a Bangladeshi I can say that most Bangladeshis dislike Pakistan since Pakistani army killed and raped so many Bangladeshi civilians in 1971.Bangladeshi people are very emotional about the liberation war.

Yes..... pakistani army did commit crimes but it was nowhere near the scale the bengali claim.
Theres threads on the issue on this forum debunking a lot of the 1971 propaganda.

The relationship between these two nations is very cold due to past history. What should be done to improve the relation between these two nations? I don't think Bangladesh can have good relation with Pakistan until Pakistani govt. officially apologize for the inhumane crime the army did to civilians during liberation war.

I personally think the pakistan govt should apologize........but the pakistani govt will only move towards a proper apology once the bengalis accept that 3 million where not killed and such propaganda is dealt with.

1974, Pakistani Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto visited Bangladesh and paid homage to Bangladesh's war memorial at Savar Upazila

In 1985, President Ziaul Haq visited the Bangaldeshi war memorial, and said "Your heroes are our heroes."

July 2002, Pakistani General Pervez Musharraf also visited the war memorial and said "Your brothers and sisters in Pakistan share the pain of the events of 1971."

Islamabad gave several squadrons of F-6 fighter aircraft as a gift to the Bangladeshi air force in the late 1980s

Why can't Pakistan govt. say sorry for 1971 war? When Hina Rabbani Khan was foreign minister she came to Bangladesh and said lets forget the past. When people read about her statement in newspaper they got so angry with this lady.

During the meeting, Hina Khar reiterated that Pakistan had regretted its actions of 1971 on different occasions since 1974 and called for the two countries to move ahead together by turning back to the past, said Quayes quoting Hina Khar after the meeting.
PM to visit Pakistan to attend D-8 summit

I think some steps should be taken to improve the relationship between two nations. What kind of steps should be taken to have a cordial relationship between two nations? If Pakistani govt. officially say sorry for the past then it would be the biggest step for good relationship.

Like i said before pakistan would be willing to say sorry but we have the get the "sorry for what" right.
If you think pakistani officials will say sorry for something that did not happen(3+milllion killed) then this not going to happen....lets get what where saying sorry for first right.
The pakistani version of events and numbers was in the Hamoodur Rahman Commission.Hamoodur Rahman Commission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Shermila Boos in her latest research book has concluded the same that there may have been altogether 100,000 causalities She has been under severe criticism from the Hasina Wajid government and those elements who still cherish Indian view. Same is the story of the rape victims. Even the Bengali analysts concluded not more than couple of hundred raped cases reported proved. Most of these by Mukhti Bahani
Myth-busting the Bangladesh war of 1971 - Opinion - Al Jazeera English

Roman Catholic Relief Agency put the figure of rapes to as low as 4000. (New York Times, January 30, 1972). In fact, only ten cases of rapes had been reported till August 31, 1971, and the culprits tried and punished. These few cases were swollen to the exasperating figure of 300,000. The falsity of Sheikh Mujib’s repeated allegation of rape of 300,000 Bengali women was exposed when the abortion team he had commissioned from United Kingdom in early 1972 found that there were no more than a hundred or so pregnancy cases they could deal with throughout their stay in Bangladesh. (Bangladesh Papers, Vanguard, Lahore, page 287)
Dr. M. Abdul Mumin Chowdhry, a Bengali nationalist who actively participated in the separatist cause, writes in his book ‘Behind the Myth of Three Million’, writes, ‘It was reported that on arrival in Dhaka on 10 January 1972, the lobby behind the fabrication of the absolutely impossible figure promptly briefed the returning Bangladesh leader Sheikh Mujib with added ‘fact’, of 300,000 women raped, who in turn immediately went on parroting it. Thus the fiction of three million killed and 300,000 women raped was created’.

Cultural programs can be arranged also.

Unlike bangladesh where every west pakistani was thrown out, in west pakistan no mass attacks or expulsion of bengalis took place......we know about your culture because we have loads of bengali origin people living in pakistan.

Bangladeshi people are very proud people they don't compromise on their pride and respect.

Bangladesh has a love-hate relationship with India and Pakistan. Love-hate may not be the right word but who is Bangladesh's bigger enemy. BD is similar to lebanon with its polarization. The only difference is BD is much more homogeneous.

Nothing you can do really which can develop our relationships. Specially when one of our main political parties is always using Pakistan issue for their political gains. And you cant blame the AL for it. Its an issue that they will have to use to come to power. The kind of hatred they have produced by controlling the media in the young generation will always be an impediment in improving relations with them. And AL is not going anywhere so majority of the Bangladeshi youth will always feel in the same way. And as you can see here in PDF many of the Pakistanis(and I take it to be a representation of their whole population) dont like us so relation between BD-Pak will always remain like this if not as cold as Ind-Pak.

I think its best we leave one another alone. Pakistan is better off without us and we are better off without them. Concept of United Pakistan was a failed concept from the begining.

One more thing I should say on the topic. We are also guilty of massacaring many Biharis after the war was finished in december. Its a truth we try to deny intentionally but there is no shame in admitting our wrongs. Many biharis can be alleged for war-crimes during the war but we failed to become better than them when we did similar atrocities to many innocent biharis. I always feel we failed the Biharis till today. Still today they live in seperate colonies throughout the country. One can say they dont believe in Bangladesh and still feel they belong with Pakistan but I say we failed them as we couldn't make them believe in Bangladesh.

@Armstrong ...... Tumhare posts bahut mazedar hain. I observed. Keep posting dude. Cheers!! :)

this notion of Muslim brotherhood is impractical and does not work. relations should be expanded through trade and people to people exchanges.

Well said.

Technically, it is possible to mend relations with Pakistan. But given our leadership, that is close to impossible at the moment. Merely an idealistic thought at best. I am not only including the AL in this regard.

Yes, our minority rights record isn't that great either. We've failed the Chakmas too! In fact, I've come to believe that Bengali Nationalism has inherently racist connotations. It doesn't even mean anything either.

I've also come to believe that our education, and the way parents and teachers bring up the kids are also failing. Particularly in typical middle class families in BD. Social dynamics also play a role as well.

I have to disagree about the chakmas and other minorities. They enjoy more oppurtunities than ethnic Bengalis at the moment. In the BCS exams the ethnic minorities have a quota of 5%. I mean they are not even 1% of the total population but they are offered that much seats. Presently the govt. in trying to prove itself to be more liberal is being racist to its ethnic Bengali population. Even the PSC wants this quotas removed as it is a hindrance in selecting merit. But guess what AL is not going to loose its 1% vote just for the sake getting the deserved ones in the civil service.

That is true. They do get educational quotas which the average Bengali Muslim would only dream about.

What I meant was economic development for their region. They have tremendous potential. On that front, we didn't do well. It applies to the AL as well.

Valuable time was lost when we fought them for nearly 20 years and couldn't do anything to help them. No need to say who was behind the insurgency and how well they succeeded in their endeavour. Economic development is not possible as long as we cant make them educated. Still most of them lead a primitive life. Also infrastructure is not that developed in the CHT. The lands in CHT can effectively be utilized in many possible ways but people from the mainland are afraid to go there since security is an issue. All the army camps are being withdrawn one by one and it is becoming a safe heaven for crooks of the whole country. I dont think we will be able to use those vast landmass in forseeable future. Just cant see the logic behind the withdrawal of army.
