India:1'st Full Prototype Tokamak Fusion Reactor Successfully Commissioned

Teller Ulam physics was hacked back in the late 90's, what does that have to do with a TOKAMAK? :what:

That's what I told him, that it didn't come out of the blue, the folks wanted the GLAST because that is an area that they have been researching in. Sill he didn't seem convinced, wanted to know if it could be used for going after the Teller-Ulam.

Yes, ergo my response to that question- " :undecided: :blink: "

@Dillinger @Hyperion - It sounds like a tongue twister I go 'Tomahawk' every time I want to read it as 'Tokamak' ! :cray:

One of the signs of being an Evil Mullah. do you also have a preference for using your left hand while fondling goats- If yes then you are MOST DEFINITELY an Evil Mullah. @Hyperion keep a weather eye on him.

To tell you the truth, the word "reactor" is unsuitable for Tokamaks. They should be named something different, else some of our neighbors in "West" may get the wrong idea and wish to bomb us with a ten ton "reactor"! :cheesy:

We are your neighbors in the "East". We will only bomb you the day the American Marines secure your bases and your nukes are taken off-line, after that all bets are off. :taz:

Yes a reactor is a bad designation, ergo the reason I used an approximation (the best I could do here) of the oft used expression "" (imagine me finger doing that in the air) when I used that term in my reply to Yzd.

Oh, that was a mistake. I was pointing finger due "west"! :cheesy:

Pen***d, Yanki doodles karr he na lein, Pakistan koi Kansas hai? Allah mian' bhee dass daffa sochtay hongay, in paglon' say panga loon' kay nahin'! :cheesy:

The word tokamak is a transliteration of the Russian word токамак, an acronym of either "тороидальная камера с магнитными катушками" (toroidal'naya kamera s magnitnymi katushkami)—toroidal chamber with magnetic coils, or "тороидальная камера с аксиальным магнитным полем" (toroidal'naya kamera s aksial'nym magnitnym polem)—toroidal chamber with axial magnetic field.

And yes , this is from wiki ..... :D

Perhaps, but more funding is required. There are far too many projects in the offing in the nuclear energy sector. All I can say is that we have reached quite a good place in terms of basic and applied R&D, one of the exceptions in the Indian public sector- where reliable supplier/vendor chains have been established in country. So more funding, MUCH more is called for.

Its not terribly difficult to understand, I do it all the time, pick up topics that have nothing to do with being a munshi and understand them- its a good source that is required and wiki just confuses the hell out of people.

I also do that but nowadays trolling in PDF is way more interesting than that . No time left for reading and understanding ......

@kurup @Indo-guy It's NOT the first tokamak in India. Aditya was the first tokamak which went into operation back in 1990 itself. SST-1 is the evolution, like the Chinese EAST, the GLAST mentioned here is the HT-6M design from Hefei (apparently the 6B tokamak was handed over to Iran) details of which have been posted by me in the Tokamak thread.

Indeed I am aware of India's first prototype Toakamak " Aditya " ....

I already mentioned about it in post no. # 12 .

The current SST-1 as you rightly said is evolution of previous one....signaling maturation of Indian technology ...

The significance of current Toakamak is that it is " full-scale " version of modern tokamak ...

Anyway thanks for other information ....

India's long record of experience with tokamak research is one of prime reason why it was accepted as one of the 7 founding members of ITER ...besides US ,EU, Russia , Japan , China and South Korea ....

But as I said before ...ITER is truly endeavor ....and the futuristic technology belongs to the whole world !!!

I am glad India has done its bit in what is a truly International attempt to address global problem collectively ....

we need to see many more such projects ....

As they say ...Make Love ...Not War !!!

We need to find a most cost effective way for nuclear backed electricity supply first....

Nuclear fusion is the cleanest form of energy ....unlike traditional Nuclear power plants/reactors ....it has nothing to do with radioactive or fissile material ...

....all attempts are being made to turn fusion reactors technologically and economically viable ....

This is the way to go ...This is the future ....

One can envisage all nuclear power plants being replaced by Fusion reactors some 5 decades later ....

I believe Fusion reactors will keep its promise ...

It is the key to the future ....

IT was listed there before.Anyway for more detail

http://www.iter.org/newsline/15/1025

there is one more coming soon

I am not able to find the Official site of Now

Pakisatn Tokamak explained in detail

http://www.iter.org/newsline/15/1025

Pakistan's rapid foray in Tokamak technology is commendable ....
Pakistan alongside of other 32 nations have played crucial role in fabricating some subsystems for ITER ...

This is one of the Positive developments that Pakistan should boast off ...and rightfully !!!

I strongly believe Science is Pakistan has been underrated ...and undermined by its establishment as well as outsides alike ...

It is a proof that Pakistan can play meaningful role in comity of nations ...

Congrats Indians :bounce:

Please don't try to make any WMD use of the reactor :ashamed: I know some of you might use it against Saudis :cray:

It is not possible by any current rate to make WMD out of fusion reactor ....the very fact all countries are collaborating with respect to it ....tells you that it is unlikely ....

Do you think countries like US , Russia will freely collaborate about something ...where there exists strict regime control over simple trade of fissile material ....

WMD out of fusion reactors is just not possible ....definitely not at current technology mankind possesses ...

Building fusion reactor itself is so difficult ....that's why an International project like ITER is underway ...

You have to understand at core of Sun temperature of 13 million degrees Celsius exists ....and at Fusion reactor it is 10 fold ....that is 130 million degrees temperature ...at which even atoms fuse ....

Off course containing such temperatures is humongous task ....that's why after 50 years of reasrch ...and 33 nations working together ...it is still in experimental phase...

As the famous adverb goes ...

" we are trying to put Sun in the box ....but we don't know how to make the box ...."

Currently we are still trying to make box which can contain " micro-sun " .....

Bhawawwawawawawawwawawawwawawa

OT: Anyone here with the bright idea of converting a Tokamak into gigaton weapon? :cheesy:

As I said before ...technologically not feasible at the moment ....

But if you look at the Universe ...

we have Exaton ....bomb( I billion billion ton ) that is exploding since past 4.5 billion years ....

Our Sun ...which is basically nothing but giant fusion reactor ....with temperature of 13 milliin degree Celsius at its core ...

So even if you can have " nano -sun " device ....you can easily get your " Gigaton " weapon ....

May be few hundred years later .....why not ???

Everything is possible ....

All that nature can do ....we can mimick ....

and God-forbid ....all our science is but mimicking nature ....

From our aircrafts , our nukes , our devices , our technology ....all are derived from some or other natural process.....or phenomenon which we have merely copied ....

So it is possible ....not today ....may be long long time in future !!!
