Who was the greatest 20th century mathematician? China's Chen Jingrun or

Britain's Andrew Wiles should also be a candidate for the topic. Andrew Wiles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thus, it becomes a Triple Threat Match. :yay: It is worthwhile to note that, amongst these three, only Chen Jingrun was both born and died in the 20th century, making him the only true 20th century mathematician out of these three. :coffee:

based on maths today is year 2013 and we have to wait another 87 year and after that we can come to conclusion..............

20th century, not 21st century. This century's candidates so far are Terence Tao of Australia, Grigori Perelman of Russia, Sun Zhiwei of China.

Srinivasa Ramanujan was a genius. He can be compared to Carl Gauss in pure intelligence, but if the profoundness of discoveries are taken into consideration than the top three Mathematicians of the 20th century are

1. Jules Poincare
2. David Hilbert
3. Alexandre Grothendieck.

However, it remains a fact that Chen Jingrun was the only one who lived in a single century. :bounce:

Sorry, I haven't heard about Chen Jingrun, he must be very good if you are comparing him to Srinivasa Ramanujan.

By the way, Alexandre Grothendieck is still alive and is 80 years old.

But considering how young Ramanjun died he achieved a lot in his time.

True. However, though he lived for only 32 years, he had the help from Namagiri. Chen Jingrun didn't have help from a deity. Namagiri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Erdos, a Hungarian mathematician, also only lived in the 20th century and can be considered on the same pedestal as Chen Jingrun. Paul Erd

And now you know. :bounce:

"Srinivasa Ramanujan was the strangest man in all of mathematics, probably in the entire history of science. He has been compared to a bursting supernova, illuminating the darkest, most profound corners of mathematics, before being tragically struck down by tuberculosis at the age of 33... Working in total isolation from the main currents of his field, he was able to rederive 100 years’ worth of Western mathematics on his own. The tragedy of his life is that much of his work was wasted rediscovering known mathematics"
— Michio Kaku

Michio Kaku is the famous theoretical physicist known for having authored the widely read book "Hyperspace"

He was also notoriously ugly (no surprise there).

Greatest Mathematicians of the Modern Era:

Leonhard Euler

Henri Poincaré

Carl Gauss

Alex. Grothendieck

Pierre de Fermat

David Hilbert

G.W. Leibniz

J.-L. Lagrange

Isaac Newton

Not the 20th century, but the last 400 years or so.
