Day after crash, IAF grounds Sukhoi fleet for checks
TNN 2 December 2009, 04:11am ISTText Size:|Topics:Crash
NEW DELHI: The country's entire Sukhoi-30MKI fleet has been grounded for "precautionary checks'' after one of these "air dominance'' fighter jets

crashed in Rajasthan on Monday. IAF has sought the help of Russia and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to investigate the crash. ( Watch Video )

The two pilots, Wing Commander Srivastava and Flight Lieutenant Arora, had ejected from the Russian-origin fighter while taking part in fire-power exercises at Pokhran after fire alarms went off in the cockpit around 5.30 pm.

"Preliminary indications are that it was caused due to a technical defect. The pilots ejected after they saw fire alarm buttons glowing red... Probably the engines were on fire,'' said a source.

"The airframe and systems of the entire fleet will undergo a thorough inspection before they are allowed to take to the skies again,'' he added.

IAF is already in touch with experts from Russia, with the Sukhois still being under contractual warrantee, as well as HAL, which had "manufactured/assembled'' the fighter indigenously, to help in the court of inquiry ordered to investigate the exact reason behind the crash.

Even the earlier Sukhoi crash of April 30 is primarily attributed to technical defects, with "some'' design problems and system malfunctions playing a role in the mishap.

Defence minister A K Antony, in fact, had held that the April 30 crash was due to "a likely failure of the fly-by-wire system''. The Sukhoi fleet had then been grounded for around three weeks.

IAF has inducted 105 of the 230 twin-seater Sukhois -- primarily based in Pune and Bareilly at present -- contracted from Russia in three deals worth upwards of $8.5 billion.

With both China and Pakistan bolstering their air combat fleets, IAF has asked the government for another 50 Sukhois -- each of which would cost around $45 million -- to cater for any contingency on both the eastern and western fronts.

HAL, in fact, has been directed to end the production of 140 of the original 230 jets under transfer of technology by 2015, instead of the originally scheduled 2017-2018.

With the Sukhois being the latest and most potent fighter in India's combat fleet, IAF already earmarked airbases like Tezpur and Chabua in Assam, Halwara (Punjab) and Jodhpur (Rajasthan) as the new airbases to house two Sukhoi squadrons each. Earlier this year, the first four Sukhois were deployed in Tezpur to kickstart the entire process.

In 2005-2006 session, an Indian SU-30 leader, Wing Cdr. W********* was in UK to participate in JSCC in Swindon.
The Indian Commander had disclosed that although the SU-30 has a great weapons carrying capacity and looks impressive when performing at air shows, but if he had to go to war, he would prefer his old stead,
the Mirage-2000.!!!

Why would anyone need health care when he/she can live in this:

@greyBoy2 and conworldus :

I Agree that Health care is quite Important but wont u agree that India who had full faith in anything but Military Spending Faced the Bitter War with China when Indian "friendly" dreams of "indi-chini-bhai-bhai-" [ Indian and Chinese are Brothers ].

It revealed how ill prepared was India. It was a lesson for us.
Indians can live without food, But Not without Pride.

That same is true for any nation. Even a Pakistani leader said " We shall eat Grass but Get Nuclear Weapons"

Counter Arguments can exist but Many can point on what is NOT Right in China too but That will not be the Right way to counter an Argument Altogether. In Contect Arguments Make better sense that Those Out of Context.

I like a nice documentary - "1983 - At the verge of apocalypse".
The Thing is Russians Reacted like Frightened Cats to the "Paper" exercise "Able Archer" by NATO.
Leave aside what India is Spending - Russia was at the Verge of a Nuclear War and The Cause - They didnt wanted to Recall the "Operation Barbarosa" when Hitler Attacked Russia.

If u think. What India is doing is Taking lesson from The Past.
After all 3.5% of GDP Spending is Fine and necessary ( if not less ) for a country with 100Crore People.

Comments r Most Welcome.

Take it easy. For me, food and health are way more important than the military of my country... Maybe for India it is not true.

Every ones likes A Platform They are used to.
I Read That a US Naval Pilot said F14 was far better than F18.

May be True but I too had issues with Office 07 when it first came but now i can say its far better than Office 2003.

I never said its NOT Important Thats why we Spend only 3.5% on Military which is Less Than China and Pakistan.

96.5% is spent on Food, Medicine and Education and Industries.

But I ask You - when a Burgler attacks ur House whats More Important : a Gun or Bread ?
And To Use a Gun you Must have had purchased it Earlier.

We spend 1.96% of our GDP on military, but if you want to believe those rumored numbers that is your choice.

The fact remains that in China, there is no widespread starvation death. In India thousands of people die of hunger every month and 60% of your children do not have proper nutrition.

You sir, have access to internet and can speak English, so I assume that you are not suffering from any of this. For this reason I don't think that your belief represent that of most Indians.

Take it easy. For me, food and health are way more important than the military of my country... Maybe for India it is not true.

That's why 35% of our GDP is spent on Subsidies for food and Oil.

This ridiculous thing came about because of arguments like the one u make.

Frankly if we let the GoI set the budget up normally the first time, we wouldn't have as many problems as u would now.

India cant afford to put everybody on social service. so its not like Funding the Military stopping that. In fact the Military provides jobs for more than 2 Million people.
not to mention their families. Most of the defense budget is spent o personnel any way.

Frankly the India without the India Military where it is today, India wouldn't be where it is today.

On that note how much money do the Americans spend on their military or the Chinese on theirs.

Our spending is just one third that of china. And even if u combine the rest Military spending in the world. It wont even equal US.
