What's new

Modi enjoys twice the security cover of his predecessor

The video shows the SPG guys sans their helmets.
Wearing a bullet proof jacket on their chest which protects them against an AK 47 shot and nothing to protect their head? Isnt that foolish??

But how would a Bangladeshi like you would know that.
Either you dont know how a BD flag looks like or you are not really a newbie. :coffee:

safety of Modi is more important to country than for modi himself... Any mishap would have serious repercussions!

@Abingdonboy
I always wanted to ask you this, that why do they use BMWs and why not Audi or a porche??
Arent they all in the same league after all??
Well when it comes to Head of State vehicles there are really two brands that stick out- BMW and Mercedes (Audi have less pedigree in this domain same goes for Porsche but to a much greater extent). The BMW 760Li Security edition and S600 Guard have always been the two flagship off -the-shelf Head of State sedans and there isn't a lot in it in terms of specifications (brake horse power, ballistic protection, cost etc) to be honest. I think (from what I have heard) the BMW has always been the better handling car and is more drivable and the Mercedes has been the "softer" vehicle to ride in.

Haha, thanks mate! ;)

I think the X5s were purchased over, say, the Chevy Suburbans (as used by the US Secret Service for instance) for a number of reasons:

1) They are "sportier" than the Chevy behemoths and thus can keep up with the PM's 760Lis producing almost 550 BHP from a V12, at ease especially If you see the way the PM's cavalcade zips along at speed in the NCR.
2) The Chevys are HUGE (very wide, very long) and perhaps are not the most suited for many Indian roads.
3) From a cost point of view it makes sense to go for another BMW product once you have decided upon the BMW 760Li Security edition for the PM's personal vehicle. It will ensure was of maintenance- most of which can be done in India itself. if a Chevy was purchased for such limited numbers (not more than 20) Chevrolet wouldn't be setting up a dedicated base of operations in India to support less than 20 vehicles and it is silly to send the vehicles back to the US or need to fly in spares specifically for them.

The X5s do what they need to- provide proximity cover to the PM's car and transport 4 SPG agents (excluding the driver) each.

isn't a helmet useless against rifle rounds?? i was always under the impression helmets are meant to protect you from shrapnel from grenades, mortars, and artillery.

or at least against AP rounds.

Do not get on the wrong side of @levina apa. She chews trolls like you for breakfast.

???? hmmmm....

thanks !! :)
I always considered both the German vehicles Audi and BMW at par.
Audi "A8 seurity" version has a superb acceleration, it takes just 5 secs to reach 0 to 100 miles/hr.At the same time BMW 7 series security version would take 6 secs to reach 0 to 60 miles/hr, add to that BMW is heavier too.
what about mercedes S guard 600? they all come close isnt it??
I guess price becomes a deciding factor in all these cases.BMW gives almost the same performance at a cheaper price.
Its just what I assumed all this while.

German tech all around. Even Obama's motorcade uses BMW 7 series while German Chancellor uses Audi.

Though i am not sure if BMW X5 would be a nice fit.....since it's not a full size SUV. Probably Land Cruiser or American SUVs can help. You can use those like crap, and they'll still work.
Hmm nope not a landcruiser.
1) Land cruisers 're bulkier than X5s.And it should be for the same reason toyota's luxury brand Lexus also didnt make it to PM's cavalcade.
2) Land cruisers are better for off road conditions. Our Pm doesnt plan a desert safari :).
X5 provides increased grip and control under all road conditions.
3) X5s are more fuel efficient and better torque when compared to landcruisers.Though i guess maintenance wise Landcruiser would 've been better. But then these vehicles 're changed often so the maintenance issue also doesn't arise.
well this is what I know about these 2 vehicles.

well I've heard of bullet proof helmets which 're good against an AK 47, though not sure if our SPG uses them.

Security is provided based on the threat perception, What is the big fuss about it???? MMS would be the last person to be targeted by anyone, But one cannot say the same about Modi......

I've driven both the X5 and LC, LC has better AWD system on and off road. The grip is phenomenal. There is a reason it is the vehicle of choice in conflict zones/ UN missions. Reliability is unmatched.

Conflict zones like middle east??
yeah Landcruiser anyday !!

But then we are talking about a Prime minister of a country and his cavalcade.
Landcruisers 're often used by the police in this part of the world but even then I've never seen it being used in President/ruler's cavalcade. There should be a strong reason for that. Isnt it?
As I said earlier not even Lexus is considered good for this job.

@Abingdonboy will Obama be using his own calvacade during republic day ? Or will he be travelling with Pranab Mukherjee?

It would be good to see the "Beast" on Rajpath

According to a video you uploaded on youtube the Chief guest travels with President of India.

See from 6:30. the Bhutan king is alighting from the same car as President Pranab Mukherjee

Yes it has been the standard procedure for all Chief Guests of the republic day to travel in the President's car for arriving at the parade. However It was confirmed a few days back that Obama will be departing from tradition and traveling in his own car (the beast) behind the President's S600 Pullman (as I suspected would happen).

So there will be 4 motorcades this year. President, Vice President, PM and Obama. It would be a delight to see that

I want to compare Obama's with Modi's. They probably are the leaders facing the highest threats in the world
