Lebanese prime minister resigns amid tensions with Hezbollah

BEIRUT — Lebanese prime minister Saad Hariri resigned from his post Saturday during a trip to Saudi Arabia in a surprise move that plunged the country into uncertainty amid heightened regional tensions.

In a televised address from Riyadh, Hariri fired a vicious tirade against Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group for what he said was their meddling in Arab affairs and said “Iran’s arms in the region will be cut off.”

“The evil that Iran spreads in the region will backfire on it,” Hariri said, accusing Tehran of spreading chaos, strife and destruction throughout the region.

Hariri was appointed prime minister in late 2016 and headed a 30-member national unity cabinet that included the Shiite militant Hezbollah. The government has largely succeeded in protecting the country from the effects of the civil war in neighboring Syria.

The country is sharply divided along a camp loyal to Saudi Arabia, headed by the Sunni Muslim Hariri, and a camp loyal to Iran represented by Hezbollah.

Hariri’s resignation Saturday was expected to sharply raise tensions in the country. In his speech, he suggested he feared for his life and said the atmosphere in the country is similar to the one that existed before his father, the late prime minister Rafik Hariri, was assassinated in 2005.

Several Hezbollah members are being tried in absentia for the killing by a U.N.-backed tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands. Hezbollah denies any involvement.

He said Hezbollah’s policies have put Lebanon “in the eye of the storm.”

“Hezbollah was able in past decades to impose a status quo in Lebanon through its weapons directed at the chests of Syrians and Lebanese,” he said.

Earlier this week, Saudi State Minister for Gulf Affairs Thamer al-Sabhan sharply criticized Hezbollah, calling for its “toppling” and promising “astonishing developments” in the coming days during an interview with the Lebanese TV station MTV.

Al-Sabhan met with Hariri in Saudi Arabia when the now resigned prime minister was visiting first earlier this week. Hariri abruptly returned to the kingdom later Friday before his bombshell announcement Saturday.

In tweets after meeting Hariri, al-Sabhan described it as “long and fruitful meeting” that resulted in agreements over many issues that concern the Lebanese. “What comes is better, God willing,” al-Sabhan tweeted on Tuesday. In a series of tweets, al-Sabhan criticized the Lebanese government for tolerating Hezbollah’s criticism of the kingdom.

He earlier said that those who cooperate with Hezbollah must be “punished.”

The attacks on Hezbollah came on the heels of new U.S. sanctions on the group.

lol US propaganda to divide Muslims. Washington post article on an assumed divide in Lebanon. How about the new black and white divide in USA and high tensions there.

Great. Time to end this less than 40 year old terrorist cult that controls tiny Southern Lebanon and undermines the Lebanese state while being a partial proxy of a enemy state/regime of the Arab world. It cannot be so that a group in any Arab country is aligned to foreigners first and foremost and not its own people and nation.

The bunker rat in action (warning, it will break the hearts of the Iran-lovers)

Him being exposed for what he is:

Hezbollah's sources of income derives from 1) drug trade, 2) illegal weapons trade, 3) corruption, 4) counterfeit, 5) extortion. Another "Islamic" group in action.

The terrorist cult also killed Rafiq al-Hariri (prime minister of Lebanon back then).

Hezbollah are heroes, not terrorists.

The Hariri has announced his resignation in a country that is trying to weaken and undermine Lebanese nation against Israel. Obviously whilst Lebanon is at war with both IS terrorism ,in-on Syrian boundary, and Israel at the same time, this resignation is is a desperate effort from Ale-Saud sheiks to undermining and weakening of Lebanese state. Israel's ally in Najd has asked this from that puppet who has tried to destroy Lebanon's resistance force and hand it over to Israeli regime. Sa'ad Hariri is also under charge of murdering his own father. And helping KSA to tranfer opium and drugs into Lebanon to destroy Lebanese youth.

Shouldn't forget that Lebanon and Syria are the only anti Israel states and are fighting against gulf-monarchy supported/funded terrorists. KSA's support for Syrian Al-Qaeda is something that Saudi family is openly announcing, and in the meantime they are sending Takfiri sheiks into Syria to support them ideologically.

If we remove Hezbollah from Lebanon at this time, there will be no difference with war-torn Syria and Lebanon. This process of undermining and weakening of Muslim states on Israeli cheers, has been the policy of gulf-sheiks since a long time ago. Lebanese groups on the other hand fortunately are united against that puppet who resigned recently. It can ensure the safety of this Arab state that is resisting against Israeli occupation.

Meanwhile This is KSA's open political war against Lebanese nation. Using her puppet. Israel's backdoor ally

Allah be with you Hassan Nasrallah, you have our pray.

Hezbollah are heroes, not terrorists.

Some consider Daesh heroes and not terrorists as well. What is your point?

What exactly makes them heroes? What have they accomplished? Do you think that Lebanese nationalists want to see their country in such a state or are happy about seeing the South being controlled by proxy by foreigners (partially) and a hostile foreign regime?

It's a cult and nothing else.

Anyway what is your real identity Ultroll? Don't hide it any longer.

Lebanese do not need Hezbollah to defend themselves from Israel and other potential hostile elements. They did that long before Hezbollah existed.

Hezbollah if it wants to exist long-term should cut ties with foreign entities and not act as their proxies. It should become a purely Lebanese Shia Arab movement that has the interests of Lebanon as a first priority and not following the drums that the head of the Wilayat al-Faqih regime dances to.

Hezbollah is undermining the Lebanese state. Look at the state of the Lebanese military. The political system. Nothing more is needed to be said.

Southern Lebanon borders Israel as the only region of Lebanon and for the past 20 years Hezbollah has done nothing against Israel other than acting as boarder guards for a leader that hides in a bunker 24/7 and conducting 1 raid that ended with over 1000 Lebanese civilians dying and tremendous destructions of non-Southern Lebanon as well. Great success.

Whatever country you originate from, I suggest that KSA creates some terrorist cult in your country that seizes a large part of your country and acts like a proxy or partial proxy for KSA. While undermining the political process and military of your country in the process and engaging in all the ills that I mentioned as well as occasionally killing your country's political leaders.

Lebanese is a diverse country religiously. Shias are a minority overall. Turning Lebanon into a Wilayat al-Faqih regime will never be accepted by Sunnis, Christians, Druze and non-Islamist Shias. Let alone turning it into a proxy of the Iranian regime.

Go take your medicine foreigner and stick to domestic Iranian affairs and not Arab ones. The amount of nonsense in that post is hilarious but nothing else is expected from a drone like you. If your beloved Mullah regime had killed your own parents you would still defend them blindly. Another fanatic. Yet to see you criticize a single thing about them and their policies within Iran or outside of it. Grow a spine sheep.

@Halimi the only Lebanese user on PDF agrees with me 100%. He can explain to gullible ignorants what is really going on in Lebanon. You won't know because 1) you don't speak Arabic, 2) you are not familiar with Lebanon, 3) you don't follow the politics of Lebanon on a weekly/daily basis.

If the Mullah's say that Hezbollah is great you will parrot that. 5 months ago Qatar was an evil terrorist supporter (lol) and nowadays they are a dear neighbor. You are parroting that as well. So keep doing that sheep.

Hariri had to resign.

Reason is this that Hizbullah/Iran/Assad have already won the war in Syria and kicked the Saudi/American/Israeli backed Jihadists out of Syria.
Now there is no face saving left for Saudia for this defeat.

ISIS are terrorists because they force their religion on others. Hezbollah do not do that. When was the last time Hezbollah attacked the west or Israel? Never.

Who is winning in Syria exactly? There are no winners. Syria is destroyed thanks to the stupidity of the Al-Assad regime (first and foremost) and secondly the stupidity and mistakes of the Syrian opposition. As for Daesh, it is self-evident.

You are very mistaken if you think that the Al-Assad regime can ever rule all of Syria again or that Bashar al-Assad (he will be the last ruler of the Al-Assad dynasty) will rule for a long time.

Or most importantly, that a highly sectarian Alawite minority dictatorship who compromise less than 12% of the Syrian population can have "control" of Syria forever when 80% of the population is Syrian Sunni Arab. Too much blood has been spilt.

The Syrian revolution erupted after 40 years of frustration with the regime (one of the most oppressing and brutal in the world) and you think that 10 times the destruction will change that? It will only make it stronger.

Anyway why don't you allow India or another foreign hostile entity to set up a terrorist cult on the territory of Pakistan thereafter for them to seize some Pakistani territory completely, act on behalf of that hostile proxy and undermining the Pakistani political system and the military while occasionally assassinating Pakistani leaders?

Any Lebanese nationalist would spit on your likes.

You did not answer 99,9% of the content of my post. Why is that?

Well, Hezbollah never attacked Israel. There you have your answer. So much for the non-existent "resistance" which is another propaganda tool to control sheep with. No such thing.

Black people are 12% of the US population and the US had a black president. Alawites are Arabs. They are not like another ethnic group.

That's not the point here. This is not about ethnicity or even sect. Alawites are Arabs indeed. Nobody said otherwise.

The problem is that the Al-Assad regime and allied Alawite tribes and clans control almost all of the military, government positions and many other sectors in Syria. They have basically turned Syria into a oligarchic system as a clear minority while having a monopoly.

This won't work on the long run just like Saddam Hussein's regime did not work out longterm either. Like in Iraq, previous uprisings in Syria were crushed with brutality. Nowadays the same thing is occurring just with foreign aid.

Ba'athi regimes are very good at seizing power using USSR tactics and keeping it for some time (while brutally destroying any dissent) but eventually they crumble like in Iraq.

Anyway this is not about Syria. I support the Syrian Arab Army against Daesh and other radicals. However I support Syria and the Syrian people first and foremost and not some temporary regime that has done much more harm to Syria and Syrians than good.

Nobody is a winner in Syria. Everybody is a loser. Go ask the average Syrian if this is a "win". The war will not end either anytime soon.

Assad won election fair and square. Syria was prosperous under Assad before 2011.

I wonder if a fake Islamist like you (pretending to be an Islamist in order to have Shias on PDF support you as otherwise they share very little in common with you as an Iranian nationalist and thus your agenda) will like this speech of your "hero"?
