What do you mean by short most are a series of episodes. What exactly are you looking for ? Did you try the ones i listed ?

Area 88 is the only one really (The animation is horrible) there is another one called kamikaze but it is a OVA so really short(Plus it is WW2). Why not try Macross series. Specifically try Macross Zero as that has some modern jet action but is generally futuristic. There isn't really any modern Jet Animes.

I didn't know you were looking for action K-On is slice of life.

Maybe also try Gunslinger girl ? It has good story and gunplay.

Overview-K-On!'s story revolves around four Japanese high school girls who join their school's light music club to try to save it from being abolished.
