Comilla, Nov 1 (bdnews24.com) - Traffic movement on the Meghna and Meghna-Gomti bridges on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway will remain suspended for six hours for maintenance work from Saturday midnight until Sunday morning.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has directed all vehicles to use alternative route during this time.

Traffic from Maynamati in Comilla and Dhaka-Kachpur point will be stopped on Saturday at 10pm.

Comilla Roads and Highways Executive Engineer Mohammad Abdur Rahim said it was the fourth round of maintenance work. Incomplete repairs were done with assistance from the Army's engineering wing, Corps of Engineers of Bangladesh Army, in September. However, some rubber pads, plates and bolts of some expansion joints broke down.

It was for this reason that the repair work had to be carried out every 15 days, he said.

The bridges will also be closed on Nov 17 for six hours. Those were shut for six hours each on Oct 6 and 20.

The BRTA has directed the traffic from Chittagong to use Comilla-Sylhet regional highway through Brahmanbaria to reach Dhaka. Outgoing traffic to Chittagong from Dhaka will use the Kachpur bridge-Narsinghdi-Brahmanbaria route.

Highway Easter Superintendent of Police Rezaul Karim said the highway police would be alert to ensure smooth traffic from Maynamati through Brahmanbaria-Narsinghdi route this time.

Repair work halted, 2 bridges to stay open

Dhaka, Nov 1 (bdnews24.com) — The Ministry of Communication on Thursday said the six-hour repair work on the Meghna and Meghna-Gomti bridges on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, scheduled from Saturday midnight, has been put off.

A press release from the ministry said the repair work on the two bridges had been halted considering the public interest, and hence, there would be no traffic disruption.

Earlier in the day, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had announced that the bridges would remain closed as traffic from Maynamati in Comilla and Dhaka-Kachpur point would be stopped from 10pm Saturday.

It had also directed all vehicles to use alternative route during the repair.

The bridges were also shut for six hours each on Oct 6 and 20.
