Fourteen personnel were rescued from the dry dock and two, including one Navy diver, are missing after INS Betwa, a guided missile frigate and a frontline warship of the Indian Navy, tipped over on Monday during repairs, leading to extensive damage.

The main mast has broken and diving operations have started. The Indian Navy has ordered a court of inquiry into the accident that occurred at around 2 pm. An accident of this proportion has never happened with the Indian Navy. Casualties, if any, could not be confirmed.

INS Betwa, Navy's Missile Frigate, Tips Over At Mumbai Dockyard

  1. INS Betwa today tipped over while undocking at the Mumbai dockyard
  2. The Betwa is an indigenous 3,850 ton ship that is now lying on its side
  3. It is armed with anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes

The navy's INS Betwa, a guided missile frigate, tipped over while undocking in Mumbai, naval spokesperson DK Sharma said on Monday. Two sailors are missing while 14 have been rescued with minor injuries.

The 3,850-ton ship is lying on its side on the dry dock at the naval dockyard. It was in refit, and while being returned to the water - a process that involves tipping the ship - the system snagged and the entire ship fell sideways. The main mast broke.

"There has been an incident in the cruiser grounding dock... The incident occurred during undocking evolution wherein it is suspected that dock blocks mechanism failed," said the spokesperson.

The INS Betwa, one of the principal warships of the Western Naval Command, is armed with Uran anti-ship missiles, Barak 1 surface-to-air missiles and torpedoes.

Named after the Betwa river of Madhya Pradesh, the ship participated in the rescue of Maldivian hostages in 1988 and the evacuation of Indians from Lebanon to Cyprus in 2006.

Heights of incompetency. 200 million ship badly damaged. Mast is broken. Chances of scrapping it now. Apart from possible loss of life.

The Shipyard should be punished and fined.

IN seems beset with poor luck.
Luckily it's a old ship. If it's a brand new INS Kolkata. That will be even worst.

So an old ship was into refit process, met incident.

It is an accursed ship

This ship was already out of service since 2014

In 2014 it had met with an accident and was in repairs

Accident -- Repairs-- Accident

In case our Friends are WONDERING

NO LOSS of Combat capability for Indian Navy

Since this ship was NOT operationally deployed

Any detail w.r.t. 2014 investigation report because such things are not cursed but definitely an error causes the incidents. Any details?

Really? but the news article say otherwise
a guided missile frigate and a frontline warship of the Indian Navy
Anyway, hopefully no human lives lost

It was returning to sea after refit hence the crew on board.

Shows that heavily armed ship damaged badly.

Fortunately Since this ship was not operationally deployed it does nt affect the navy's combat capability

Yes It is a financial loss

However we are getting more ships soon

Not old by any means as commissioned just over ten years earlier.

''INS Betwa, a 3,850 tonne, 126-metre-long Brahmaputra-class guided missile frigate, was commissioned into the Navy in 2004. It's packed with missiles, weapons and sensors.''

A loss is a loss, no matter how small. IN should learn from this mistake, a through enquiry should be done to find out the exact reason for this mishap.
I think if the damage is extensive then no need to save the hull. Just scavenge all the missiles and equipment from this ship and transfer it to new one and scrap the hull.
However this does not reduce the operational capabilities of the navy by much.
