25,000 Indians 'ready to fight in Iraq to defend Shia holy sites'

What is there in shrines, they are of no islamic value, I don't mind if ISIS demolish shrines in Iraq , they are centres of unislamic activities.

This attitude towards others lies at the root of the problem. and no one seems to learn .

Oh wait......what's coming up?? The Indian Mujahedeen after Hindu Taliban killed innocent minorities just a few days ago??? I hope India stops this stuff otherwise this will eventually turn into sectarian violence more than they can handle, just like what Pakistan is going through after supporting similar mentality crazy religious people!

Pakistan has an embedded defense to such situation in its society which India does not. If it wasn't for our culture we would have disintegrated at least 6 years ago.

India should refrain from flirting with this beast, otherwise they are going to pay heavily.

All is well but you are repeating the Khilafat Movement Mistake of Gandhi. Indians have no business of going and shedding blood in distant Iraq when our own country needs it.

Why blame India?

These are individuals or sectarian groups expressing their wish - what control would the GOI have over someone running their mouths? One good thing is we have a major Sunni and a major Shia population - a lot of Ahmedi's too and there is no infighting - except for the occasional tiffs between them. This is because of the big elephant in the room that refrains them from going at each other like the rest of the world.

I hear Sunni's have been attacking Shia's in Australia too?

More than 25,000 Indian Shia Muslims are on standby to fly to Iraq and defend its holy shrines, one of the country’s largest Shia organisations claimed today.

There are more than 50 million Shia Muslims in India whose leaders have close ties to Iran and Iraq, home of their faith’s holiest shrines.

Their recruitment campaign to defend the Shia-led Iraqi government of prime minister Nouri Maliki mirrors the recruitment of his militant Sunni insurgents in Britain and Europe. Three Sunni volunteers who appeared in a recruitment video last week included two young men from Cardiff and one who grew up in Aberdeen.

The drive to lure protagonists from each side of the rift in Islam, including Iraq’s Shia Mahdi Army fighters returning from Syria, highlights the potential for the conflict to become the biggest Sunni-Shia sectarian battle since Saddam Hussein’s forces invaded Ayatollah Khomeini’s Shia revolution in Iran in 1980.

Isis leaders have vowed to take their insurgency to Karbala and Najaf, home of two of Shia Islam’s holiest shrines, where they claim they have “scores to settle”.

The rift between Shia and Sunni Muslims dates back to the 7th Century succession battle between the Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Imam Hussein and members of Umayyad clan who sought to turn the Caliphate into a dynasty.

The resulting war became a rout of Hussein’s followers and their siege at Karbala. They were starved, many died from thirst and the survivors were massacred. Their ‘martyrdom’ is marked every winter when Shias beat their chests and flay themselves with blades to repent their failure to come to Hussein’s aid.

India’s Shias said they would not stand by while Karbala is attacked again. Their recruits include bankers, students, doctors and engineers and their leaders have written to the Indian government to stress Isis’ support for terrorist attacks in India too.

“We have 25,000 volunteers who have filled in the forms and given their passports and are ready to go any moment. Another hundred thousand have got in touch with us and have pledged their support. We are looking at a million volunteers to form a human chain around the holy shrines of Karbala and Najaf, in case the Isis attacks. We will do everything to stop the advance of the enemies”, said Syed Bilal, spokesman of Anjuman-e-Haideri which protects Delhi’s own ‘Karbala’ shrine.

“The volunteers are educated young men from different backgrounds. We do not plan to train them in arms. We will go there to fight them bare handed”, he added.

Shabbir Hussian, a Shia masters student in Delhi, said he was ready to join the battle immediately. “We are ready to die and kill for our holy shrines. We won’t allow the desecration of our religious places”, he said.

like i care if they die or live there....non of my concern.... at least we will have more space here ...
Gandhi was a secular neta who favored muslim and fasted against hindus.... his bigotry led him to that mess....

We might not get enough time to enjoy our popcorn before and after 150 Millions fight each other and government waits for their extinction.
why not...i am not secular...and i don't care for the after mess in Iraq... once who goes there should enjoy bullet fire...
neither should govt. bother for it... let them go , let them kill , who cares...

These shrines have a value of history and memory which people attach to them. ISIS are monsters on the ground and you are the one on the internet.

You mean Indian Muslims should refrain from this right? Apart from Indian workers stuck in the middle, India has nothing to gain, everything to lose from this fight.

We have British Muslims, American Muslims going over there.

India should stop this 25,000. But it can't stop dozens trickling from both the sunni and Shia sides.

Apart from extracting Indian workers, what exactly does India hope to gain?

All is well but you are repeating the Khilafat Movement Mistake of Gandhi. Indians have no business of going and shedding blood in distant Iraq when our own country needs it.

The topic is even more stupid, when you consider the Indian government has made no move whatsoever to support any side.

Any move to Bolster Iran could potentially jeopardise Modi government's renewed attempts at Indo-U.S Nuclear deals.

I hate muslims in general, but this sect (Shias) Iam always in favor of, they have always suffered. I wish India could create its own hezbollah.

Defend your shrines guys, infact as the guy mentioned before take some langoor sena, bajrang dalle also

Except India has nothing to gain diplomatically and strategically by that move.

If India does do it, it means repercussions. Indians have to be more smart about this.
