Bangladesh Army will handover ‘Dag Hammarskjöld Medal, a posthumous award, to four army personnel, who lost their lives in UN peacekeeping missions in 2011. Late Major Zia, late Captain Iftekhar, late Corporal Yunus and late religious teacher Abdus Salam have been awarded for the posthumous award given by the United Nations (UN) for 2011. Chief of General Staff (CGS) Lt Gen Md Mainul Islam will handover the medals to the family members of the four heroes on Wednesday through a function to be held at the officers club of Dhaka Cantonment.
Director of Overseas directorate Brig Gen Selim told The Independent that the UN awarded four Dag Hammarskjöld Medals for four heroes of the armed forces for 2011 as they lost their lives in UN peacekeeping missions last year.
Of them, Major Zia and Corporal Yunus died in UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, Captain Iftekhar died in Sudan and religious teacher Abdus Salam died in Ivory Coast, he said.
“With the four personnel, 75 peacekeepers, who lost their lives in UN different peacekeeping missions in abroad awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal so far.
Of the 75 personnel, 71 Bangladesh Army men, one from Bangladesh Navy and three from Bangladesh Air force have been awarded the medal.
The Dag Hammarskjöld Medal is a posthumous award given by the United Nations (UN) to military personnel, police, or civilians who lose their lives while serving in a United Nations peacekeeping operation.
The medal is named after Dag Hammarskjöld, the second Secretary-General of the United Nations who died in a plane crash in 1961. The first medals were awarded in October 1998.
Major Nazmul, an officer of Director of Overseas directorate of Bangladesh Army informed that a total of 108 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have been killed and 142 injured till date in different peacekeeping missions abroad.
