4 supercomputers from India in world's fastest 100

Well done India. Are the processors indigenous?

Why has India slowed down since 2008?

nope....the processors n chips are mostly bought from either nvidia or intel (there might be other companies involved but these two are main)

and slowing down is due to lack of funds....thats for sure

I hear India has a big IT industry. Are there any indigenous processors being developed within the country that could be utilised for supercomputers any time soon?

m not aware of any actually....just two weeks back i started following supercomputing in india

and IT industry is way way way wayyyyyy different from electronics industry....

India's IT boom is fuelled by software demand....India's electronics industry is way behind....still trying to catch up

Actually India is capable of designing even world No 1. Super computer, But it will be like a short lived status. some one else will beat the speed in couple of days or weeks. this status of fastest computer in the world is of no use.

What we need is better alogorithms and better programs to solve complex problems.

For Chinese.. they should be really produd because most of the electronics they use would have been made in China.. I hope soon they make their own processor.

The Indian Government has committed Rs 10,000 crore which is a little more than USD 2 Billion to indigenously develop the world's fastest supercomputer by 2017.
The Indian Government has committed Rs 10,000 crore which is a little more than USD 2 Billion to indigenously develop the world's fastest supercomputer by 2017. The Planning Commission of India has agreed to provide the funds to the Indian Space Research Organsiation (ISRO) and to the Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Bangalore to develop a supercomputer with a performance of 132.8 exaflops (132 quintillion floating operations per second). A quintillion has 18 zeros (a million has six).

In computing, flops is an acronym to measure computing performance. An average personal computer can go up to 7.5 gigaflops.

The current world's fastest supercomputer is a Chinese one, which can do 2.7 pentaflops, or two quadrillion flops. A quadrillion has 15 zeros.

In 2007, India had the world's fourth fastest indigenously-developed supercomputer with a performance of 172.5 teraflops (172 trillion flops), which has been enhanced this month to 220 teraflops. That's still a level lower than China's supercomputer.

The Indian supercomputer will not be used only for enhancing the country's space abilities, it will also be used to predict monsoon and precise weather inputs to boost agricultural output of the country. The target being set by India is very ambitious while referring to achieving the 'EXAFLOP' or the next level of computing performance by 2017. ISRO has indeed planned everything very carefully to set such a target for itself.

The Indian Governments's willingness to provide Rs 10,000 crore for having the 'EXA' level of supercomputing facility is a real coming of age for India. At a time when the west is cutting down their annual budgets, India is steaming ahead with it's enormous spending power.

ISRO has already booked key equipments to develop the supercomputer by 2017. Most of the other gadgets will be indigenously developed in India. Supercomputing is key to competing in the international space market.

India had 10 machines in the top 500, but after that there was a bit of a downfall. In contrast, in 2004, China was nowhere on the scene but in the latest list, its supercomputer has taken the top ranking."

lack of funds, nothing more.

Lack of funds?

You do know how to find excuses for yourself。

A low petaflop computer costs less than 100 million dollars now a days。

You are buying helicopters worth tens of millions of dollars each from the US,yet you don't have the money to build ONE petaflop computer?

The National University of Defence Technology team that made the 33.8 petaflops Tianhe-2 will have a 100 petaflops computer at the National Supercomputing Centre in Guangzhou before 2015.

The same team also plans to build an exascale machine(》1000 petaflops)before 2020.

In the meantime,Dawning Corporation,a well-known company for supercomputing in China, has signed a 2.5 billion yuan deal with the Chongqing Municipality government to design and build a 100 petaflops Dawning-600 that will be housed at the National Supercomputing Centre in Chongqing before 2015。

In the chart shown in post 36 posted by qwerty, it has included Italy, S Korea, Russia. How dare Top500 miss out shining india?
