Backing India’s bid for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council (UNSC), former French President Nicolas Sarkozy today said it is “absurd” to imagine that the world’s largest democracy is yet to become a permanent member of the powerful wing of the world body.

India will soon be the world’s most populous country in the world and “it is really absurd to imagine” that ” it is not a permanent member of UNSC”, he said while addressing a conference organised by an industry body.”We must ensure India has a permanent membership of the Security Council. How can you ignore a billion Indians?” Mr Sarkozy wondered.

Proclaiming himself as a “friend of India”, the current Leader of Opposition of France, said there is something “very special” about India and he shares a “deep fascination” for it and said there must be strategic partnership between India and France.

He advocated reforms in the architecture and functioning of global institutions like the G20 and the WTO.

The former French President said he was opposed to the double status of some countries having veto power in the UNSC while others don’t.

France’s partnership with India, he said, can grow stronger if India becomes a permanent member of the UNSC.

He said there was a “need to increase the permanent members” and every continent has to decide who it would like to designate as a permanent member. He also said the architecture of other global institutions like the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the G20 and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) needs to be relooked at and reformed.

Referring to the yet to be concluded nearly Rs. 60,000 crore Rafale jets deal and the nuclear pact, Mr Sarkozy gave a “commitment” that his party or whoever comes to power in the French presidential election scheduled to be held next year will honour India’s agreements with the French Republic.

“There is a possibility that in a year there will be a new government in France, possibility (is there) that our party will come to power in France. Commitment that agreement with the French Republic will be respected,” he said.

“If you sign agreements for nuclear reactors or Rafale we will commit to these when we come to power. France is 100 per cent behind you whichever government is in power,” said the former French President.

Noting that India has an “immense responsibility towards its citizens and the environment”, Sarkozy lauded the country’s stance at the Paris climate summit, terming the position taken by it as “very courageous”.

The universal agreement, which were reached at Conference of Parties (CoP21), aims to keep the global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius this century and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

India had hailed as “historic” the adoption of a legally-binding pact in Paris but said the deal could have been more ambitious, if developed nations had shouldered more historical responsibilities.

Sarkozy maintained a good relation of France with India when he was the President of France.

@Taygibay @Vauban @Picdelamirand-oil Is Mr Sarkozy running to be president again?

Sarkozy showed interest in participating in the Republican party's primaries that will take place on november, but isn't officially candidate.
The candidate that's leading the poll (in the republican primaries) is Alain Juppé,the actual mayor of Bordeaux.

oooooooo your signature is harsh. And burns

we only deserve the seat from one point and that is we were on the winning side in world war 2. Currently a country with 40+ crore people below poverty line has no right to seat amongst the most powerful nations of the world. May if we develop our economy, technology and HDI then we can claim that place. Just coz India has 1.23. Billion people living doesn't make it the candidate.

actually it is absurd that sarkozy the genocider and war-criminal is being allowed to travel internationally instead of being put on trial in the 'international criminal court'... but i hope the libyan green resistance or the syrian government grab him.

secondly, india is not a democracy, especially when the central government is being run by a reactionary, brahminical, capitalist movement and when many intellectuals call this government as fascist... neither is france a democracy nor is usa nor the "mother of all parliaments" britain.

thirdly, associating with war-criminals/genociders can get one put on trial by a near-future international progressive people's committee... one should avoid the risk and remember bush and blair being declared in absentia as war-criminals by the 'kuala lumpur war crimes commission'.

India will soon be the world’s most populous country in the world

is that supposed to be a compliment?? or even something to be spoken without shame?? is that something to be legitimized or excused away??

approximately 850 million males and most of them parasites, useless, frivolous, a shame to manhood and harmful to humanity.

and “it is really absurd to imagine” that ” it is not a permanent member of UNSC”, he said while addressing a conference organised by an industry body.”We must ensure India has a permanent membership of the Security Council. How can you ignore a billion Indians?” Mr Sarkozy wondered.

1. the uno must be abolished because it has simply become a tool for nato for invading progressive countries.

2. if not that then the uno security council must be abolished and the uno further reformed, all this as muammar gaddafi had proposed in his september 2009 speech in the uno general assembly :

www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKMyY2V0J0Y

Proclaiming himself as a “friend of India”, the current Leader of Opposition of France, said

non, sarko, you are not my friend.

you are not even your own friend, look at how ugly your popster wife is.

there is something “very special” about India and he shares a “deep fascination” for it and said there must be strategic partnership between India and France.

sarko, can you define what is "very special" about india??

He advocated reforms in the architecture and functioning of global institutions like the G20 and the WTO.

who the hell are g20 and wto?? two more agencies to impose capitalism-imperialism upon the suffering masses of earth??

money system must be abolished... no money no economics.

The former French President said he was opposed to the double status of some countries having veto power in the UNSC while others don’t.

gaddafi said exactly that in 2009 ( the above speech ) and he called the security council as the 'terrorist council'... why did you invade his truly democratic country then??

France’s partnership with India, he said, can grow stronger if India becomes a permanent member of the UNSC.

your idea is rejected.

Referring to the yet to be concluded nearly Rs. 60,000 crore Rafale jets deal and the nuclear pact, Mr Sarkozy gave a “commitment” that his party or whoever comes to power in the French presidential election scheduled to be held next year will honour India’s agreements with the French Republic.

i care not about the indian military but about india removing itself from being 'suicide capital of the world' and 'honor killing capital of the world' and 'dog capital of the world' and capital of every kind of oppression there can be imagined.

Noting that India has an “immense responsibility towards its citizens and the environment”, Sarkozy lauded the country’s stance at the Paris climate summit, terming the position taken by it as “very courageous”.

absolutely... so indian government should stop bullshit military deals and put full effort to turn india into a socialist welfare state where most things are either free or subsidized or low-costing.

better yet let india become the first country to abolish the money system internally.

The universal agreement, which were reached at Conference of Parties (CoP21), aims to keep the global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius this century and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

India had hailed as “historic” the adoption of a legally-binding pact in Paris but said the deal could have been more ambitious, if developed nations had shouldered more historical responsibilities.

the rise in world pollution in the last twenty years and the so hot and dry summer in india this year is mainly mainly because of the neo-rich middle classes in china and india - all those millions of new cars, motorcycles, cell phones and offices, all built to circulate capitalism.

isn't india the second largest car market and the largest cell phone market??

indians blaming the "developed world" is misleading.

There are no criteria that can stop India to get a permanent seat in UNSC, it is absurd to think some deficiencies of India and conclude India do not fit the criteria.
One way or another India will get it that much is for sure but the way it gets it is important. IMO, India should stop actively lobbying for it at this point, keep building consensus behind the scenes and gaining clout and wait for the day when the establishment come to India and offer the seat otherwise the entire institution looses credibility.

Well, to complete my friend's take, he may face justice in any case.
Whether or not this is brought up by the Left set apart, it makes run-
ning a bit like painting a target on your own back. We'll see ...
But the political animal is very much alive!

^ someone pls save jamahir :( he needs help :undecided:
he needs a job :(

Actually, he has one! Sort of! He's like the forum cat! If you don't know
him, he may answer pats with an irritating dreamed socialism scratch
but ... as Assurancetourix, when he doesn't sing, he is quite enjoyable! :flame:

Quite inline with both Indian wait and see attitude and logic! Must be a first? :P

Peace for all of you, Tay.

There was only one criteria to have been a member of the P5, i.e. to have been a major independent country on the allied side of WW2.

Don't tell me you think China was rich and powerful in 1945?

We were the most destroyed nation on Earth at that point, we got the P5 membership because we fit the criteria, nothing more.

It has nothing to do with a powerful economy, a powerful military, strong diplomacy, since China had none of those things in 1945.

As of 2015
People below poverty line: 169 millions (not 40 crore)
HDI: 0.609
Population:, 1.28 billions (not 1.23 billions)
