Afghan, Pak envoys clash at UN security council meet

UNITED NATIONS: Top diplomats from Afghanistan and Pakistan engaged in verbal sparring during a discussion on cross-border terrorism and presence of terrorist safe havens, at the UN security council.

"The fact remains: so long as terrorist sanctuaries continue to exist in Pakistan's soil and some elements continue to use terrorism as an instrument of foreign policy, peace will not prevail, neither in Afghanistan, nor in the region," Afghan ambassador to the UN, Zahir Tanin, told the 15-member body during a special security council discussion on Afghanistan, yesterday.

"We also are very concerned with ongoing border shelling; this constitutes a serious threat to Afghan sovereignty and the prospect of friendly relations between our two countries," Tanin said referring to the recent exchange of fire across the Af-Pak border.

Pakistani ambassador to the UN, Masood Khan, later was sharper in his response.

"I reject most emphatically ambassador Tanin's argument - root, trunk and branch - that terrorist sanctuaries exist in Pakistan and some elements continue to use terrorism as an instrument of foreign policy," Khan said.

"No, sir, this is not true; and you know this is not true. And this is not good diplomacy. By using such arguments, you cast aspersions on our sincerity," he said.

"In Pakistan, we do not operate as elements, but as a whole, as one state. All institutions of the state have consensus that terrorism is a threat to both Pakistan and Afghanistan and therefore both countries should work together to eliminate this scourge," Khan said.

"I have not rebutted Ambassador Tanin's argument as a tit for tat response or to settle scores. I have said this to highlight that terrorists operate on both sides of the porous border. Many attacks against Pakistan are planned on Afghan soil," he said.

"That is why we need more aggressive policing and surveillance of the border. This will also help stop the shelling. We must not allow terrorists to manipulate and divide the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan," Khan said.

"This kind of contentious polemic is disingenuous, as Pakistan and Afghanistan communicate through multiple political and military channels to address all bilateral issues," he said.

:omghaha::omghaha::lol::rofl::rofl::rofl::omghaha:

This used to be India and Pak about 10-15 years back.. How the world changes :)

There goes the strategic depth....

In your wildest wet dreams.

Pakistan has disagreements with the Afghan govt. The taliban are the real players in the country who represent the pashtun community, they are our allies, and thats our strategic depth.

America have begun making peace overtures with them because they know in the long term Karzai's govt cannot hold power, the Taliban will come into power.

So the $2billion a year you pay to Karzai for his loyalty will mean nothing, looks like the jokes on you.

why indians having orgas.ms on Pak-Afghan matter?

Because they think their goons are smarter than the ones at Washington and Moscow....they think with their tiny little investments they own afghanistan....

Only you wish my friend. Only time will tell..
NATO will be involved in Afghanistan for atleast another decade, though they will wind down their operations in 2014 and hand over to Afghan national forces. US has agreement with the Afghan government to operate dozens of bases in Afghanistan for many many years. In the meanwhile the western forces will keep strengthening the Afghan army with weapons and training and help them stand on their own. Unlike the 90's, this time US will stay engaged in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. Even without much outside support in 90's, the northern alliance did give a tough time to Taliban, who had full military support from Pakistan and financial support from Arab gulf countries.
Pakistan can keep dreaming about having influence over Afghanistan via Taliban. Even if Taliban can regain their power in Afghanistan, we are not absolutely sure whether Taliban will oblige Pakistan. Infact, there is a big chance that "if" and when Taliban consolidate their power in Pakistan, their next target will be Pakistan to export their ideology. In that case, instead of Pakistan dominating Afghanistan, it will be Pastuns who will be trying to dominate Pakistan.
As far as I see it, from the ongoing talks between Taliban, US and Afghan government, there will be some kind of power sharing arrangement between Pastuns and the rest. Once Afghanistan settles down to normalcy, there is good chance that Pastun nationalism will get re-ignited on both sides of the durrand line. This will cause trouble to Pakistan.

This shows that how much Karzai government is desperate to gain attention but who cares the real players are Taliban not Karzai dog.

Because its fun at times to see Pakistan squirm at the hands of its erstwhile strategic backyard...

Another fun time about to begin, some one squirming about red lines and nobody gave a single ____ to their concern ;)

who made such afghans diplomats in UN? Ambassador Masood reply was a master stroke. Why afghan denies one of story always?
