Afghan peace process cannot be Pakistan driven: India

In a clear pointer to Pakistan, India on Sunday said that any “external” interference in the transition process of Afghanistan will be detrimental to both its success and the future of the Afghan people.

Echoing India’s views, Afghanistan said the peace process cannot succeed without being led by the Afghan people and noted that the process was fully controlled by it.

These views were expressed at a joint press conference here by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and his Afghan counterpart Zalmay Rasool after their extensive talks on issues like terrorism in the region, security of Indians and various economic projects.

Though both leaders refrained from naming Pakistan, the message was clear for Islamabad, which has been pressing for a decisive role in the Afghan transition process.

They were asked about international concerns that the transition process might become Pakistan-brokered and not Afghan-driven.

“Any external interference in the reintegration process would be detrimental to its success and for the future of democratic, stable, pluralistic and prosperous Afghanistan,” Mr. Krishna said.

Mr. Rasool said the peace process was from people of Afghanistan and insisted that it cannot succeed without being led by Afghan people.

Mr. Krishna, who also called on President Hamid Karzai, is here on a two-day visit to convey India’s concerns over some aspects of the transition process in Afghanistan, including Mr. Karzai’s move to provide representation to the Taliban over which New Delhi has serious reservation. India feels that such a move amounts to giving legitimacy to these elements.

The External Affairs Minister also asserted that despite security concerns, India will continue to provide developmental assistance as long as the Afghan government wants. He also noted that Afghanistan government has assured India of full security.

“India is not going to be cowed down by such threats. We will continue to remain in Afghanistan as long as the legitimately elected government of Afghanistan wants us...,” Mr. Krishna said.

In February last year, seven Indians were killed in a Taliban suicide attack on foreigners in Kabul, which claimed 16 lives and left 20 people critically injured.

Let me ask indian Govt, how much did you help afghans during Soviet invasion Afghan War of 80's and then post war?

Wasn't india supporter of soviet a close ally and a silent enemy during invasion. The only nation to take the burden for those Afghans was/is Pakistan.

And what choice does india have in this matter. Can Mr. Krishan please tell us how and exactly how can they keep Pakistan out of it.

That was thirty years ago. And pakistan didn't do it out of a holy feeling of brootherhood...there were lots of US dollars involved. Right now, the afghan people, having been released from the shackles of extremist tyranny are looking towards the Indian brothers to create a democratic and stable afghanistan that will create new prosperity for all. they love the selfless love and affection of the Indian people and want to march towards a new dawn of glorious and prosperous existance.

Well India has no option but to accept what we decide for Afghanistan or Afghans themselves. Its primarily the Afghans but we have a large Afghan and Pashtoon population in Pakistan, thus we become significant in the equation.

Neither India nor America are in position to decide what should be future of Afghanistan except People of Afghanistan. Afghan Taliban and ISI are very bad boys.. aren't they?

Becoming significant doesn't mean dicating terms. For teh afghans, you are the new russians, except that the means you are using to achieve your objectives are different. There is much more commonality between what India wants and what they want.

some people can not digest India's role in Afghanistan and it's brotherhood with Afghan people.

Traditionally, Bharat had been the sponge of Afghan aggressions and afghans look down upon bhartis, the only afghans who admire bhartis are those who want to destabilise pakistan or those who have been bollywoodised by watching their vulgar movies, They will never consider bhartis to be on their level.

Afghans are brave, religious and honourable people, they will soon clean afghanistan from bharati infestation like 1996

Only the Afghans should decide ,and India and Afhanistan's neighbors should play a side role in ensuring that.

We really dont need to listen to bhartis, Afghanistan is pakistan's closest neighbour, pakistan has shown commendable patience in tolerating the afghanistan's aggressive behaviour since 1947, it is because we see them as a brother not as a base to occupy and spread terror to other countries, Afghanistan's neighbour Iran and pakistan have every right to decide its future, our security depends on their security.

The army from afghanistan will be instrumental in capturing Bharat again

Pakistan needs to be its influence to make it clear to the Afghan government of our dissatisfaction of Indian involvement..........

At the end of the day, it is there choice on who they wish to follow, however just like India using its influence of economy against Pakistan in nearly every defence and other deals it makes in the world, Pakistan too should tighten the grip of any trade passing through Pakistan to and from Afghanistan.......this will make them come to their senses very quickly as to what our needs, concerns and expectations are.........its all swings and roundabouts..........
