Quite a surprising news: Ukraine sold An-225 and related technology/expertise to China ?!

Sina reports the same:

And now also in English: http://www.nextbigfuture.com/2016/06/china-is-in-preliminary-talks-with.html

China is in preliminary talks with Ukraine to finish the second Antonov 225 cargo plane

China is in talks with the Ukraine to finish a half built second copy of the Antonov cargo plane. It would likely cost about $300 million to complete the plane.

The Antonov An-225 Mriya is a strategic airlift cargo aircraft that was designed by the Soviet Union's Antonov Design Bureau in the 1980s. It is powered by six turbofan engines and is the longest and heaviest airplane ever built, with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes (710 short tons). The Antonov An-225, initially developed for the task of transporting the Buran spaceplane, was an enlargement of the successful Antonov An-124. The first and only An-225 was completed in 1988.

Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines operates seven An-124s, as well as the massive An-225, the largest cargo plane in the world. Antonov was looking to convert the An-124 into using western avionics and engines.

Antonov has helped China's Shaanxi Aircraft Company to produce a much improved version of the Y-8 called the Y-9, which can carry 20 tons of cargo. In addition, China held discussions with Antonov regarding the possible co-production of the 150-ton capacity An-124 Ruslan, which exceeds the 120-ton capacity of the US C-5 transport.

China plans to build more than 1,000 heavy strategic transport aircraft. In January, the China Daily reported that the People's Liberation Army Air Force was preparing to develop a new fleet of stealth fighters and heavy transport aircraft. The latter, the Xian Y-20 transport, was in particularly high demand, given Beijing's lack of a "fast and reliable platform" to deliver arms and soldiers over long distances.

Heavy transport aircraft are critical to extend the operational range of China's airforce. They can be used for mid-air refueling. It will also allow for rapid deployment of troops and tanks to different locations.

Just a few minutes before a new thread was opened !!!!

Hold the horse, this could be a hoax. There are many question on the authenticity of the photo, the identity of the Chinese company and the A-225 (is A-225 same as AN-225?).

China definitely need a strategic airlifter equivalent to the C-5 and An-124.
It will be more for commercial lifting rather than military. C-5 and An-124 are outdated dinosaur which US and Russia are doing away. They are too big and too heavy that dedicated and specific runway needed for them to land. How can they be strategic in terms of wartime?

An-225 is useful in peacetime of transporting large oversize commercial parts.

They have their uses when you need to get something delivered quickly. It doesn't have to be to the front line.

Can you imagine how long it would take to send a helicopter to the other side of the planet?

I don't think China wants to send tanks and helicopters for quick intervention in foreign countries. Thus there is no need for military requirement of such large airlifted as AN-225.

Though having know how to building of large transport jet may help China to built new aircraft far larger than Y20.

Y20 can do all air lifting for home land defence from Liaoning to Tibet. Tanks and helicopters can reach hot spots quickly from current military bases.

And its only memorandum for future deal of licensed production. Todays signed deal is only about selling one An-255(second in the world) that is going to be built in Ukraine.

Not technology/expertise, just licensed production

Thanks ... but therefore I added a "?!"

Anyway, do You know what does this include ? Delivery of the second An-225 ? ... blue-prints to licence-produce the An-124 ? (IMO much better suited) ... what about the D-18T engines ?

Thanks in advance,
Deino

Delivery of the second An-225 ?

Building second An-225 in Ukraine to full working state and selling it to China. Then after this second finished An-225 will be delivered they "promised"(memorandum) to sign next deal for licensed production An-225 in China

Also China pre-paying for building An-178 (25 planes)

what about the D-18T engines ?
There is nothing specific in news about D-18T engines
