Ajit kumar – a visually impaired man cracks Civil Services Exam to become an IAS officer

Ajit Kumar from Haryana is an IAS officer now after a long struggle. But what sets Ajit apart is the fact that he had lost his eyesight at the age of five with 100% visual impairment. Ajit cleared the civil services exam in 2008 but DoPT assigned him as an IAS officer after the long delay due to his physical inability.

Ajit Kumar initially wanted to be a doctor as he had lost a relative after a prolonged illness. But due to acute diarrhea at the age of five he lost his eyesight which made him change his decision and he decided to take up Civil services.

Ajit Kumar was born in Haryana and studied in a blind school in Delhi. He did his MA in political science and worked as a teacher in a Haryana. In the year 2007 he became a professor in Shyam Lal College of Delhi University and in the year 2008 cleared the UPSC exam.

Ajit Kumar secured a rank of 208 among 791 candidates who cleared the exam in the year 2008. Ajit Kumar was initially offered only Indian Railway Personnel Service (IPRS) and not the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. But Ajit Kumar approached the Central Administrative Tribunal and later he was appointed as an IAS officer. Ajit Kumar is now 32 years of age and will go under the IAS training in Mussoorie.
