Alex Jones told to pay $965m damages to Sandy Hook victims' families

Free speech has its limits. Jones chose to demonise victims which resulted in violence and harassment against them by his fans.
He deserves to lose everything.

The dude forms an opinion and expresses it and has to pay almost a Billion dollars in compensation, seriously?:-
Come on Khansaheeb, you post more intelligent material up until now. In 3/4 of the world , you can't even speak the truth. THat includes Pakistan as several channels have been silenced.

Here is a guy thats spreading hurtful lies: not hurtful to you but to the parents of the kids who died. THats not where it ends. Its the only way he is making money. So yes, there are limits to free speech.

Free speech: give the free speech and be done with it. But to make that the center point of his business is to make money from these lies is past the boundaries of the law.

There are limits to free speech: all Trump lawyers that blamed (without any evidence) the voting machines are now defending defamation lawsuit against the company that makes them.

Free speech is not the same as spreading known lies and profiting from them.

AJ is a dick, but this decision by the court was an absolute travesty of justice and mockery of the law.
AJ is a nut job, yes, but what how is this a travesty of justice and mockery of the law?

There were multiple victims of his baseless allegations, and he has to pay them all.

He should be made an example of to the fully extent of the law, so that others like him will from now on think twice before sending misinformation and harass innocent people.

Also, if AJ thinks he's not gonna pay the victims, he's already lost all favor with the judges, so he's pretty much fucked and destined to pay them.

Let me present a familiar scenario. What the proponents of free speech here don't understand is that these commentators are the enablers of the genocides America commits overseas by demonizing and other-izign Muslims. That's why it the you see the reason most americans are anti-war is their " (a few dozens of) our boys are getting killed overseas" and not "our boys are killing millions overseas"

Some might say they just give their opinion.

Bernard Lewis was a scholar giving his scholarly opinion too.

he has to watch every move he makes because the court can authorize the seizure of the assets

Alex Jones was right about gay frogs tho. When people gonna pay him because they made fun of him for this theory

I think this sets the right precedent.

Why should people spread fake news with impunity - we live in the social media age where anyone can post anything - no verification, no repercussions and it's causing chaos in society.

Hopefully this is a first step to making online commentary and social media accountable.

He'll file bankruptcy since this is a civil case and get the debt written off. Thus, in the end, it was a waste of time and money.

Buddy that is the biggest punishment - he has gone from a proud multimillionaire to a beggar hiding his funds.

he can protect one of those homes from creditors. the other four have to go

Yes, but knowing the network he has, he will bounce back the following day. So he will be a millionaire again the next morning after the discharge, and the families will get whatever is left after their attorneys take their fees, usually 33% of the reward.

Now, to bring knowledge about the American bankruptcy system. If you are married and have joint assets in your spouse's name, if one spouse files bankruptcy, 50% of the non-filer spouse is protected. The trustee will sell half and give the remaining half of the funds to the spouse. So if he were worth $ 100M, the bank accounts and personal assets would be divided, and his spouse would get $ 50M.

My family and I, while running businesses, have structured assets so that if one unit goes down and bankruptcy has to be an option, we will bounce back up. Doctors in the U.S. put assets under their spouse's and children's names or in irrevocable trusts. The look-back period is usually four years under the Uniform Fraudulent Transfer Act, and federal law allows a ten-year look-back period only if you failed to pay taxes.

They have attorneys who look at the worst-case scenarios ten to twenty years down the road and know how to protect their clients. In the Enron example, executives put vast amounts of money into their primary homes in the State of Texas and lost bank accounts and other assets in bankruptcy. Yet, when they filed for bankruptcy, they kept their million-dollar homes because certain states like Texas provide 50% or 100% exemption on the homestead. The rest of the assets were split 50/50 before the court trustee took anything. Texas is the best, along with Florida, to protect homes in bankruptcy.

Hence, Alex Jones was laughing at the families. Take him down a few notches, but he'll still maintain his lifestyle.

I understand what you're saying - but we're talking about one of the most famous men on earth. If he is seen to be spending any money, even if he goes large on his McDonald's meal - there will be a thousand articles on it. His life is over.

President Trump will help him pay or set him free :usflag:

Do you know the names of Enron executives? Or Lehman Brothers? How about Bernie Madoff's wife and what she is doing without Google searching?

The human mind tends to forget things in 30 days. Even if it's reported he will make money of it. Trust me it's not as bad as it is.

People like him thrive and stay relevant by being on the news.
