Attack on Srilankan cricket team in Lahore

Only if you knew anything about the tactics of a security detail, you would understand the bravery and professionalism involved in this incident by the Pakistani Police. To sum it up for you, basicially the tactics of a security detail require that the primary objective is to protect the VIP first and than secondly eliminate/thewart the attempted murder. And if you notice this is exactly what they did. Protect first and than fight. So usually when this happens all the security gaurds usually huddle very tightly around the VIP thus taking the bullets, and then secondly fighting back. Keep in mind there is quite a bit more to this but I summerazied it for you!

Now if you look at the video, the terrorists "who are armed to the teeth" are moving around very slowly indicating that they are carrying heavy weight. So other than the duffle bags, they are definatly wearing heavy bullet proof jackets, not the crapy flak vests. These jackets should be able to stop the 7.62mm round fired by an AK-47, which is one of guns the police uses (along with MP-5s). Combine the protective gear, weapons and ridiculusly professional training that these guys had on their side along with perhaps months of intelligence and survellence plus the surprise factor, we are all very impressed by the professionalism of the Pakistani Police. Usually surviving a nicely planned ambush such as this one is very hard to survive.

So you are wrong that the police should have done better, just the fact that all the VIPs are safe tells you something. Now to compare the operations conducted by the "Indian Para Commandos" during the Mumbai raid when the terrorists from Pakistan besieged the city, the results were far from these and they were the elite widely regarded by many a professional CT unit. I wonder what happened there, there are even reports that some of the hostages might have been shot by them. And thats here in Canada buddy, a neutral source if not pro Indian.

Had I every said police have not doen there duty properly? Let's not discredit there sacrifices.

First there is no parallel between two incidents. You will draw that only to start a nonsense debate.

So actually you accept that this planning was going on and whole security apparatus was sleeping?

Do not compare this attack with Mumbai attack. A suicide attack is multiple times destructive than this attack. If, with any further badluck, this attack would be suicide type, NOBODY from the guests could have survived.

No doubt, the Police present on the spot did very well. I salute them all. But Nitesh has raised question about intelligence. Let's not mix them together.

Intelligence failure was there , But the cops did a great job this time. But these attacks some how tells us how intricate and elaborated the network of terrorist is getting. Now most american believe that Muslim wanna kill us , But look at this these are not Muslims these are bloody crazy SON OF THE BI*TCHES. who just want to destruct everything let it Pakistani or American or Indian or European.
these terrorist did a big mistake they will loose the sympathy from every single pwerson living in pakistan.

Our neighbours should definitely learn a few things or two from this event and our elite police force. As far as pointing the fingers at RAW is concerned, it's too soon to do that. If we start doing that, we'll only lower ourselves to their hideous level, where they pointed a billion fingers at us while the Mumbai carnage was STILL active.

Brother.. its very unfortunate people start comparing things with india even at this unfortunate moment...!!!Comparing how better our police did, how many lives we saved, how bad other country was. One should understand the perinial problem reasons associated with all these activities at this time, rather than taking a dig on your neigbhouring country because brother its your country which is shamed today..!!!!.
And as far as pointing fingers as you said, you have already assumed that it is RAW and obvoiusly you are discounting the growing threat of terrorism eminating in your country. The attacks was in style of mumbai attacks, and mumbai attacks had proven links to pakistan.. So lets wait for the proof, before taking digs..!!!!

So lets join hands in condemening the incident and congragulate the police personnel who bravely protected their VIP's,and do a little introspection on how we can solve/irradicate this gun cluture and violence that we both..are suffering from.

How can you claim an intelligence failure hours after the attack? Ridiculous and disrespectful.

First of all tell me how am I discrediting there sacrifices when I am telling you that they did an amazing job?

Secondly again I never said that these two incidents were related, but are definatly extremely similar in nature and you can't deny that, and thus on those points we are surly allowed to compare the "operations conducted by CT units and the police". Please read this carefully before jumping to the meaning of my statements.

Thridly yes I do agree that an attempt such as this had atleast a few months planning if not years behind it, especially because the escape routes and the fire and manouver tactics used by the terrorists would solely would have to be made for this specific incident and perhaps practiced mock attacks. Because as of now all of them escaped!?

Sorry asim, I did not want to do that. I am just against drawing parallels and then chest thumping about professionalism.

I agree with most of your post but would like to clearify that these terrorists never had any sympathy from Pakistan to begin with that they can lose!!

Stop comparing two incidents, that's all I am saying.

Update: Priority is safety and security of SL team - Lorgat

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief, termed the attacks in Lahore on the Sri Lankan team bus as “pretty, pretty serious” and said that the repercussions could be severe for Pakistan’s cricket.

“It is pretty, pretty serious and it is very obvious that the landscape and the thinking has changed dramatically,” Lorgat told Cricinfo. Lorgat said the ICC’s top priority now was to arrange a safe trip back home for the Sri Lankan team. “Our priority is safety and security of the Lankan team and how to get them back home.”

Asked if the future of international cricket was in jeopardy in Pakistan at least in the immediate future, Lorgat said it would be too early to make any conclusive remarks but admitted it looked uncertain for the moment. “We are going to have to reevaluate what we do and where Pakistan plays its cricket.”

Lorgat also said that the terror attack in Lahore had come as an “absolute shock” for him because last year the ICC had done an assessment of suitable venues for the Champions Trophy and Lahore was listed as a safe place to play.

We all dived to the floor to take cover: Jayawardene
Updated at: 1310 PST, Tuesday, March 03, 2009

LAHORE: Sri Lanka cricket captain Mahela Jayawardene said that the players dived to the floor of the bus to take cover when the team bus came under heavy fire from terrorists, on the way to Gaddafi Stadium for the Test match here Tuesday.

"The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus," Jayawardene was quoted as saying by media.

"We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace, a member of the support staff, but most of the injuries appear to be minor at this stage and caused by debris," he said.

At least six Sri Lankan cricketers including Jayawaredene, his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana received injuries in the attack.

The team bus was shot and grenades were also lobbed towards it by armed terrorists on its way to the Gaddafi Stadium for the third day of the second and the final Test match here. Five escorting policemen were killed in the attack that took place near the Liberty.

We’re shocked but everyone is OK – Sangakkara

"There are a few injuries but everyone is safe and all the players are out of danger,” Kumar Sangakkara had told CNN IBN. "We are shocked, but apart from that everyone is okay. Thilan [Samaraweera] has a shrapnel wound in his leg, but he is fine. [Tharanga] Paranavitana had shrapnel in his chest, but thank God it wasn't very deep and just on the surface.

"I had shrapnel injuries in my shoulder, but they have all been removed and I'm okay now. Ajantha [Mendis] had shrapnel in his neck and scalp, but he too has had medical attention and is fine. Everyone else is perfectly all right.

"It's very unfortunate that this has happened. Everything had gone on very well until this morning, but it just goes to show that nothing is as it seems. I don't regret coming here to play cricket because that's what we have been doing all our lives. That is our profession.

"But I regret this incident, what has happened and the situation that we have had to go through. All we want to do now is to go back home to our families, get back home and be safe."

Sir sgt -
tribal areas support most terrorist organizations. But i think this attack is not just a big attack but also about pride of pakistan. So this time even the tribal might get a kick on their head and will forced to think who is right and who is wrong.
This will not be taken easy by Pakistani defense or Pakistani civil body. Atleast i hope it wont, this horrible act might as well act as the wake up call needed for Pakistanis.
