DHAKA: Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen has appealed to Spain to urge the international community to impose economic sanctions on Myanmar so that the country abides by its commitment for repatriation of Rohingya refugees. Momen expressed gratitude for the Spanish government's continued support to Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue.

Outgoing Spanish Ambassador to Bangladesh Alvaro de Salas Gimenez de Azcarate said Spain will need seasonal workers for agriculture in summer season.

Momen requested the outgoing envoy to consider employing seasonal workers from Bangladesh as they have expertise in agriculture sector.

Reiterating Bangladesh's commitment to combat the devastating effects of climate change, Momen recalled the successful visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the COP25 in Madrid in December 2019.

Momen envoy raised his government's efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 and also apprised the ambassador of Bangladesh's timely and effective policies in this regard.

The outgoing Spanish Ambassador paid a farewell courtesy call to Momen on Sunday afternoon at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh here. Mentioning the existing investment-friendly schemes of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh foreign minister called for more investments from Spain as well as sharing expertise, especially in energy and tourism sector with Bangladesh.

Momen mentioned that Bangladesh has exported 6.5 million PPEs to USA as well as supplied medicines, such as remdesivir and hydroxychloroquine to many countries during the pandemic. Spain can rely on Bangladesh for PPE and other pharmaceutical products related to prevention and treatment of COVID-19, he said. (IANS)

Bangladesh should setup a joint Intelligence desk with Pakistan's ISI to find a permanent solution to crazy monks.

Bangladesh should do more against Hindutva terrorism.

Arm the rohingya, throw them over the border and then look the other way.

No, it's not Terrorism, We're merely providing a kick start to their struggle for freedom and emancipation.

Bangladesh cannot do something, including assistance from the ISI, that radicalizes its Muslim population in the border areas with MM. Radicalization will then hunt the country itself even if it does not solve the refugee issue. So, arming the Rohingya is not an option.

However, I personally would endorse the arming of the Arakan Army (AA) and giving its troops shelter when needed even at the cost of limited border conflicts with the MM military. AA is made of Buddhist Arakanese.

China is already arming them.

Indian security agencies have expressed concern over Chinese weapons being provided to the terror groups active in Myanmar. In a recent development, a huge cache of Chinese weapons was recovered near Myanmar-Thailand border, which was destined to Arakan Army (AA) so that Indian assets, including the Kaladan Multimodal Project, could be targeted.

Source of this news is Indian press. So, it is difficult to know the truth. However, AA is getting weapons from somewhere and it finances the purchase by supplying Yaba in BD market.

Not the Chinese govt, but other private clandestine manufacturers must be there in China or elsewhere who produce them and smugglers hand it over to the AA.

One point. AA is based in Arakan in the south-west of Burma, but the Indian paper says the weapons smuggled in the eastern shore in the Thai border. It may not be plausible to carry weapons 1,000 km on the land/rivers to Arakan.

Therefore, I am not sure if the Indian news is real. India may be trying to putting an wedge between MM and China. MM govt has already reacted on this supply matter. I wonder what is the truth.

This news provides further details. Even though India has tried to blame China-Pakistan nexus but this article says there are black market dealers who supplied these arms to the rebel groups.

Chinese-Made Arms Due for Myanmar Seized on Thai Border

Yangon — A joint task force, including the Thai military and police, seized a large cache of Chinese-made weapons, which are believed to be destined for Myanmar, on Tuesday morning.

AK47 assault rifles, machine guns, anti-tank mines, grenades and ammunition were among the items seized in a joint raid on a house in Mae Tao in Mae Sot District on the Thai side of the border.

Two Thai nationals were arrested and six suspects from Myanmar were arrested at the Mae La refugee camp around 65 km from Mae Sot. Four are ethnic Karen and two are ethnic Rakhine.

“They are not the weapons currently used by the AA [Arakan Army]. The weapons manufactured by the Wa [United Wa State Army] and the KIA [Kachin Independence Army] are not up to much. They can’t fire on automatic. The seized weapons are original and Chinese-made,” a source from an ethnic armed organization based on the border told The Irrawaddy.

He said a black market has emerged in Mae Sot for weapons to meet the demand of armed groups in Myanmar. Individual dealers make huge profits in the business, the source added.

An AK47 costs around 100,000 baht (4.5 million kyats) and a machine gun costs approximately 300,000 baht (13.5 million kyats). The value of the seizures is around 30 million baht (1.35 billion kyats), according to the source.

“Usually weapons are smuggled to Indian rebels based on the border with Myanmar and the AA as they pay good prices,” he said. There are several rebel organizations in Assam and Meitei fighting the Indian government from bases along the border.

Former freelance photographer John San Linn and his wife were detained in the Kachin State capital, Myitkyina, in December 2017, after police found more than 1,000 bullets at their home in Myawaddy on the Thai border, according to the police.

Officers then searched the KIA’s liaison office in Myitkyina.

Chinese private weapons suppliers and smugglers are doing a good job to destabilize Indian NE and Burmese Arakan. Both are our vicious enemy.

As if it is not wrecking havoc in Bangladesh too.. This is why the Bangladeshis are vehemently against the Rohingyas housed in their country, the fire will eventually consume you also. If your government were up to any good, they would make peace with Myanmar to put any end to the unholy nexus of China and Pakistan in our neighborhood.
