Well you go to google translate and type in English in the left box. It will auto detect. Now select the right box to be Bengali.

Here's an example...

However just like Google translate in Hindi - it's far from perfect and is an effort in the making.

Spoken Bengali is not very hard if you can speak Hindi or Urdu. I think most people will catch at least 70% or more of the words and understand them. Bengali has borrowed lots of words from those languages as well as Portuguese, Spanish and Persian because of trade.

The script is similar to Devanagari script (Harf's are 50% similar). Well that's what people from India tell me. But it remains a tough yet flexible language if you need to speak 'proper Bangla'.

The first of Boishakh (First Month of the Bengali new year) is just around the corner, signaling the onset of spring marked by myriad music, dance and public performances. Some traditional cuisine that signify this celebration are shown. Of course milk-based sweets are a must!

Clockwise: Lunch choices include Fried Hilsa swimming in coconut milk, Fruit Salad, Dahi Vada, various types of spicy dried Seafood ('Loitta' or Bombil) and Hilsa Compotes.

Along with new flooding bloom Water Lilies (Kanwal ka Phool, 'Shapla' in Bengali) during the monsoon...
Shapla is the National Flower of Bangladesh.
It's close cousin Lotus is the National Flower of both India and Sri Lanka.
