Burning of the Quran in Sweden, Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Summon Ambassador Marina Berg

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will summon the Swedish Ambassador to Indonesia Marina Berg, following the Quran burning incident in Sweden, last weekend.

The plan to summon the Swedish Ambassador was confirmed by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah when contacted by ANTARA via text message on Tuesday 24 January 2023

"Yes, it's time to adjust the (schedule) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials with the Swedish Ambassador," said Faizasyah.

Indonesia has issued a condemnation of the burning of the Quran, carried out by a Swedish-Danish right-wing extremist in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, Saturday.

"Indonesia strongly condemns the burning of the holy book of the Quran by Rasmus Paludan, a Swedish politician, in Stockholm," the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said through its official account on Twitter on Sunday.

The MFA said the action was a blasphemy of scripture and hurt and tarnished religious tolerance.

The MFA also asserted that free speech should be exercised responsibly.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom has responded to the Quran burning incident in his country.

"The provocations of islamophobia are appalling. Sweden upholds freedom of expression, but that doesn't mean the Swedish government, or myself, supports the opinions expressed," Billstrom said on Twitter.

Billstrom had previously said the demonstrations could increase the risk of delayed ratification from Turkey on Sweden's application to become a member of the North Atlantic Defense Pact (NATO).

As quoted by the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the Stram Kurs Party (Hardliners) burned a book of the Quran with the permission of the government and police protection.

The Swedish government allowed the burning of the Quran because it judged that actions were part of freedom of expression and opinion.

The arson came during demonstrations against Turkey's request last week for Sweden to take decisive action against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Turkey considers a terror group.

Last year, Sweden and Finland officially volunteered to join NATO. However, Turkey --which is a member of NATO-- expressed reservations and accused the two countries of tolerating and even supporting terror groups, including the PKK and the terrorist organization Fetullah (FETO).

Indonesia summons Sweden envoy over Quran burning

JAKARTA - Indonesia summoned Sweden’s envoy on Tuesday over the burning of the Quran by a far-right activist in Stockholm at the weekend, officials in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation said.

Swedish-Danish politician Rasmus Paludan last Saturday torched a copy of the Islamic holy book in front of Turkey’s embassy in the Swedish capital, stoking the anger of Ankara, which said it would not support the Scandinavian country’s bid for Nato membership.

Sweden’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Ms Marina Berg, was summoned as Jakarta lodged an official complaint against the anti-Islamic act, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah told AFP.

“Yes, (we will meet her) within this week,” Ms Faizasyah said, without disclosing a date.

The Swedish Embassy confirmed Ms Berg would hold a meeting with an official from Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, without specifying the day it would take place.

Swedish leaders have roundly condemned Mr Paludan’s actions, but defended their country’s broad definition of free speech.

Mr Paludan’s burning of the Quran sparked rallies outside Swedish missions in several countries, including Turkey and Iraq, where protesters torched the Swedish flag on Monday and a policeman and seven protesters were injured.

Ankara last Saturday called off a visit by Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson that had been scheduled for Friday, after summoning the Swedish Ambassador and saying the meeting “has lost its significance and meaning”.

Mr Paludan, who has already been convicted of racist abuse, provoked rioting in Sweden last year when he went on a tour of the country during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and publicly burned copies of the Quran. AFP

Official protest and condemnation is better than raging crowds, but haters expect that reaction. Muslim world must get smarter. An option is to ignore the hate, however Europeans have practised many, many centuries of religious and racial hate, persecution, violence and wars. Must take away the emotional trigger and control they seek. Muslims can burn the Quran too. Burning is among the traditional ways of respectfully disposing copies of the Quran. If Muslims publicly burnt the Quran, that would instantly take away the shock-effect from haters burning it. Throw in copies of Bibles and old copies of holy books from other religions as well. And, why not mock legendary figures for the sake of freedom of speech, such as King Eric "the Victorious", aka King Eric the Murderer. Both can play the same game.

After burning sacred scripture for disposal, our traditional way is to throw the ash in flowing water such as river. Just realized that is what Hindus do with cremation.

They seek to rile you up and they succeed every time. They are controlling you. Even a tiny country like Denmark can have the so called Muslim world in helpless rage over a cartoon. What is worse is, yet they make a beeline for the West. Europe took millions. The Arab and Muslim world is obviously far worse because of extremism, corruption, poverty, violence, persecution, war, tyranny and terror. Something very defective in the culture.

why isnt that useless organsation the OIC doing something like cancelling oil trade to make these understand.

They did nothing for the Palestinians and Kashmiris butchers, in fact many of its members embraced their murderers, You really think they will dare to do anything practical as embargoes?

Our own decorated khaki 'guardians' at GHQ, sold out Kashmir, and wanted to embrace the Zionist state.

then OIC and these traitors must be disbanded or atleast ignored by populace.

It is not possible to literally burn the Quran because actual Quran is Oral by definition. A written copy of the Quran is only the Mushaf of the Quran. This is the wisdom of Allah.

The one who burn Quran is parliament member. You cannot make an analogy on this Swedish parliament member action with other action to burn very old Quran, the intention is very different. All Muslim also understand about burning old Quran, dont need to bring this basic lesson to PDF members who are mostly Muslims.

Protesting on the street is something that I dont recommend either, but this is calling Swedian Ambassador to bring clarification about the incident, this is something different. She needs to come to Indonesian Ministry office and clarify Swedish government position on this. This is more like political pressure

Why you end up talking like this ??? Burning Quran is symbolic action by that Parliament member. Too much literal thinking I see on you in this issue

Will protesting make them stop burning? This isn't the first time.
