Two dams in China’s northwestern region of Inner Mongolia collapsed after torrential rain, the water ministry said on Monday, highlighting the safety risks posed by ageing infrastructure during the summer flood season.

The dams, in the Inner Mongolian city of Hulunbuir, collapsed on Sunday afternoon. They had formed reservoirs with a combined water storage capacity of 46 million cubic metres (1.6 trillion cubic feet), the Ministry of Water Resources said.
People living downstream were evacuated, with no casualties reported, it said.

The ministry said that on average, 87 millimetres (3.4 inches) of rain fell in Hulunbuir over the weekend and as much as 223 millimetres at the Morin Dawa monitoring station.

Hulunbuir’s city government said on its WeChat account that 16,660 people had been affected, with 21,775 hectares (53,807 acres) of farmland submerged. Bridges and other transport infrastructure had also been destroyed.

Footage posted on Chinese social media showed one of the dams being completely swept away by the water, inundating nearby fields.

China has more than 98,000 reservoirs used to regulate floods, generate power and enable shipping. More than 80 per cent of them are four decades old or older, and some pose a safety risk, the government has acknowledged.
A lack of financial resources safety assessments had not been completed on nearly a third of the total Wei Shanzhong, deputy water resources minister, said this year.

This damn burst just reflects on the poor state of China

Don't worry @FairAndUnbiased the Chinese members here on PDF already posted that story. You really think they wouldn't be tripping over themselves to post it???

China is a developing country with 4x the population, you are comparing galactic hyperpower utopia to China?

Apparently in Chinese eyes when things go wrong it is unjust to point the finger at them...but if things go wrong in the US oh my my my..well that's a different ball game. Out come a dozen Chinese fingers waving.

things go wrong in your country too often, how many shooting deaths this weekend in Chicago only?

Maybe it is because I have watched too many of these types of low level dams collapsing or being removed in USA and elsewhere in youtubes, it never succeeded in exciting me.

I observed the ones in USA is much higher and some of them were dated back to the 19th century.

In USA they have removed it so that canoe and fishing enthusiasts can make full use of the unobstructed rivers.

So IMO the news is being sensationized to make a mountain out of a molehill. :coffee:

Op and other Yankees never cared about their European brothers which they are suffering heavy flood as we speak, all they care is CHINA!
I am so touched.

There is a difference.

In Germany and Belgium they blamed the mother nature which IMO sounds rational and logically.

But when it happens in China, these Western News Media will spin it out of proportion and blamed the Communist Party.

The point in here is: IMO only seemingly low IQ individual will fall for it and even try to propagate them.

:sarcastic::sarcastic::sarcastic:

Imagine these beavers alike dams were awarded to contractors who removed them using excavators and John Deere tractors with diggers.

At least Chinese Rescue Team act very Fast, so No casualties.

Unlike your lame rescue team, cannot find hundreds people for months even in small building accident. Doing Slow-mo all the time should be american motto 👎 Just like your NASA need decades to achieve what CNSA achieve in their Mars Mission

All the best for Chinese Rescue Team
