China’s ‘Belt and Road’ Plan in Pakistan Takes a Military Turn

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — When President Trump started the new year by suspending billions of dollars of security aid to Pakistan, one theory was that it would scare the Pakistani military into cooperating better with its American allies.

The reality was that Pakistan already had a replacement sponsor lined up.

Just two weeks later, the Pakistani Air Force and Chinese officials were putting the final touches on a secret proposal to expand Pakistan’s building of Chinese military jets, weaponry and other hardware. The confidential plan, reviewed by The New York Times, would also deepen the cooperation between China and Pakistan in space, a frontier the Pentagon recently said Beijing was trying to militarize after decades of playing catch-up.

All those military projects were designated as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a $1 trillion chain of infrastructure development programs stretching across some 70 countries, built and financed by Beijing.

Chinese officials have repeatedly said the Belt and Road is purely an economic project with peaceful intent. But with its plan for Pakistan, China is for the first time explicitly tying a Belt and Road proposal to its military ambitions — and confirming the concerns of a host of nations who suspect the infrastructure initiative is really about helping China project armed might.

hmmm, muricans worrying?
what pisses me iff is when these western observers and Pakistani so called liberals start pointing fingers that military is in favor of CPEC cuz of getting construction projects. That might be a small reason but the real reason is that these projects and this plan is actually good for Pakistan and puts Pakistan on the map

Here is the thing: What business does US have in that region? Pakistan can do whatever it wants in its territory. Mind your own business.

The Americans have developed a very strange fetish. The Americans truly believe that Pakistan is their property and they can dictate whatever they like.

Why Americans won't come up with a plan to counter chines hardware by offering American hardware? It's very easy no need to cry come on table simple

The Americans are truly caught between a rock and a hard place. They are propping up India to counter China. At the same time they would love to use Pakistan for all of their interests. Both cannot go hand in hand as the Americans are finding out brutally.

America has done Pakistan a huge favor. They have provided Pakistan a perfect opportunity to say bye bye. This wouldn't have happened in another 100 years I can assure you. We were extremely reliant on these Americans. From economic to military aid. As soon as the Americans stopped the aid everything fell in place. Our military leadership has finally found the ability and courage to flip the switch and change direction. It is so marvelous. The results speak for themselves.

The Americans are in absolute panic and don't know how to react. They are overwhelmed by problems and conflicts. Pakistan China cooperation is a nightmare for the US, but they cannot do anything about it.

Let me tell you this much. The more the US sides with India the more agitation and problems this will cause between Pakistan and the US. It all started during the Obama era. The West is on a suicide mission by trying to contain China.

India has no match with China neither financial nor militaryle and psychologically. Pak is all over theior minds they can be pakistan centric can never be China centric.
Americans r fools nothing more like Hafiz Sherazis famous poem A foolish Hope.

The debts that go into work with China pose a real threat to the nation. No one ever said I'm glad I got more debt

We rather have Chinese debt than American debt.

These American fools are obsessed, but their time is up.

US thought they can make India Chouwdry of the region and use India against China. What ever aid money we were getting one way or the other was on the decline anyway. Then they start treating us like school kids if you do home work today for us we will give you Lint chocolate and tomorrow you will get Cadbury chocolate, if you do that and that was their policy of carrot and a stick.
US forgot one basic thing regardless of differences among Pakistani's 3 things we will never compromise.
1: India 2: Our nuclear program. 3 Our security.

We are in conflict with India over Kashmir from last 70 years what were they thinking. When against the wishes of Pakistan Northern alliance was brought into power and given a role to India in Afghanistan. US had so much good will after 9/11 and when US went into Afghanistan. India is an enemy country to us, have no borders with Afghanistan and our soldiers and civilians were killed on daily basis due to fighting your war. Using our land and air to supply your soldiers, show us gratitude instead of kicking us on our teeth. US wants its security but forgets conveniently about ours and then top of that starts arming India, forgetting about their own slogan either you are with us or against us. They easily could have cobbled up all Afghanistan inclusive of Taliban some sort of government and walked away heads high from that country instead they choose to do something very different.

Due to our nuclear program how long they put us under sanctions, I still remember Preseller amendments more then my school text books and that was straight after the USSR leaving the Afghanistan thanks to us. That was a betrayal of high class, and that sanctions opened our eyes and we could see the true colours of US. This actually made us stronger and at the back of our minds always played a part.

Icing on the cake came for us, when US think tanks day and night start maligning us due to Indian influence. They must be under the influence of drugs when they actually thought India can control us and were recommending to administration, give more and more control to India in Afghanistan. Day and night think tanks were advising administration change the shape of carrots for us. Where are experts Lisa Curtis, Cohen and Haquani now and the rest of the filth. US never forget we have got our red lines too.

Our country despite of their short comings in different areas, characters and behaviours still managed to cobbled up CPEC to better our land and our people and now they don't like that. I know it has got costs but we have got more faith on China then US. Am sure China being our neighbour, friend and brother to us won't do to us, what US did. Also its in interests of both countries that we have got safe borders with each other and develop together and that's called a win win situation.

How the mighty have fallen.

the amount of money US is spending on research papers on Pakistan these days is astounding. No other country has ever been researched this much in human history.
They heavily rely on those research papers because they have delivered for them in the past like their research showed hitler would commit suicide and hitler did that. So their research has merit but I guess all the research on Pakistan hasn't gotten them anywhere and likes of haqqani and other 'rent a liberal dallay' haven't as much as laid an egg for them after they spent time and lined their pockets with $$$ gave them US passports too.

Then there are the indians who sold their services and delivered a lot of methane in return. The indians are the real heroes here due to their bhraminist ways that likes to collude with powers to extract from them was the actual icing on the cake .

What a poor link NYTimes is trying to make. Pak-China defence cooperation dates backs to decades, while the CPEC was envisioned only 5 years ago. Pakistan developed JF-17 with China when there was no CPEC and would be developing more even without CPEC.

They should read the book "Pakistan: a Hard Country" by Anatol Lieven, and it should suffice!! But the problem is they'll start taking Prozac after reading it....

As for the pic, in the era of LGBTs who else possess such Mert-like mojo???

LMAO at secret projects. These NYtimes authors should pay a visit at pdf once a month atleast to enlightened themselves about Pakistan. Its a well documented fact that PAF has initiated Project Azm (5th generation technologies and beyond) last year and PAF wants to collaborate with China to gain the required expertise to start with. Its no more a news even.

If you look at the faces of the likes of zalmay khalilzad who have been reduced to seeking Pakistan's favor, going from an elevated pedestal of DoMore/Sanctuaries, to now putting up best behaviour. I guess Prozac has become a weak drug:D
