Yep, they definitely showed they weren't completely out of the game when their manned mission faltered. That rover was a great technological idea.

The first modular space station was assembled by Russia in the 1980s and 1990s. It wasn't until ISS that humanity assembled another modular space station. Actually, it was Russia that came up with the idea of landing on another planet (first was Venus), rovers (Lunokhod was first), space stations (Salyut was first). The reason Russia was not able to put a man on the moon was because they didn't have a super heavy lift rocket which is required to do that. America had Saturn V which was developed by former Nazi scientist Wernher von Braun who developed V1 and V2 during WW2.

Same. You can think of Russia as modern Russian empire, the way modern Britain is British empire, modern France is French empire, modern Turkey is Turkish empire. Sure they lost some land, but flag and capital remain same. In the video below they call it Russia not USSR.

It's not about reaching Mars 7 years later. It's about "space capabilities." China caught up to India with the Mars orbiter, but in those 7 years India has made no progress with their Mars missions. Now, China is way further ahead of India with their Mars rover landing. Currently, India is nowhere close to landing a rover on Mars.
