Chinese Type 96 fails to impress in 2014 Tank Biathlon World Championship

Russian's T-72B3V has 1150 horsepower with 45 metric tons, and the rest T-72s are using 900HP power unit with same combat weight, whereas Type-96A using domestic 900 HP power unit with combat weight over 50 metric tons ```` and this competition can only be described as 'happy mud running' race, despite type-96A hit all the targets with shortest time and least rounds, and they still rank fairly low```lol

anyway, we sent ships to play with the U.S, not playing with Russia would be very strategically stupid !!

Russia is using the latest version of T72B3, with a 1130 hp engine. New FCS, panoramic system, automatic gearbox... So yes they definitely have a huge advantage, when compared with the rest of the participants. Especially those with T72B, which doesn't even have a FCS in a full sense of a word, and engine is only 840hp. Chinese tank has a FCS on par with a T72B3, and 1000hp engine.

So we have:

T72B - 44.5t-840hp - 18.87hp/t
T72B3
- 46t-1130hp - 24.56hp/t
Type-96A
- 50t-1000hp - 20hp/t

So yes Type 96A is inferior to T72B3 in hp/t ratio, but it's clearly superior to T72B. And when we talk about FCS, only two tanks with a real FCS in this competion are T72B3 and Type-96A. Armenia, Kazakhstan and Russia had practically the same hit rate as Chinese team, and two of those countries are using inferior tanks.

Hit rate after the first part of the competition:

China - 77.77%
Armenia - 77.77%
Russia - 66.66%
Kazakhstan - 66.66%

Chinese team is simply put slow. Why are they so slow? I would say that their crews are not that good. Because on the paper Type-96A is clearly superior to T72B. And let's not forget that god FCS means a lot in this competition, because every miss, adds a penalty time.

I personally expected this to be one sided competition between China and Russia.

And now i cheer for Kazakhstan :D

And here are some nice pics from the sprint:

what is the Final result ???

@proka89

Third round has just finished. It is a physical competition for the tank crew. The three Chinese teams ranked first, second and seventh place.

中国在坦克赛“起死回生”:体能赛夺第一 闯进决赛_军事频道_凤凰网

Type-96A has a 800 hp engine, not 1000 hp. Its hp/weight ratio is 18-19hp/tonne. The wikipedia page refer to the 1000hp experimental engine, not the ones in service. The earliest type-96 tank has a 540 hp engine. Later it is the gradually upgraded to the 780 hp one.

The reason Type-96A is using a 800 hp engine when type 99 has a 1500 hp one is design philosophy. There are two parts for this:
One, type 96 is designed to be a cheaper and more numerous alternative to the more expensive type 99. So it has lower performance parameter than type 99.
The second reason, the more relevant one in this case, is the role Chinese tanks play. Chinese tanks design philosphy is primarily developed in the cold era. During this period of time, the overall military capacity of China is significantly weaker than the two superpowers; therefore, vast majority of the Chinese operation doctrines focused on defending territory. Because of this, the Chinese tanks typically emphasize on armor and firepower. (Mobility is great, but it is less useful than armor and firepower if you are in the defender's position.) In contrast, USSR tanks are mainly aimed against European/NATO military. Specifically, in event of a full scale war, T-72 is expected to be the faster and more mobility attack force than their heavier T-80 cousins. Consequently, T-72 placed heavy emphasis on mobility.
It is a shame (but completely understandable) that the competition focused so much on mobility instead of shooting. I mean, we all know the main purpose of the competition is to attract customers for Russia, but they could at least put in things like night-time shooting or moving target shot.

So it's Russia, Kazakhstan, China and Armenia qualify for final stage

It doesn't matter, but you guys can't have it both ways. When China wins, hurr durr PLA best, when China doesn't win, we didn't send our best, we don't care for such competitions, and all sorts of excuses.

You'd be ther not make any excuse.

Our team failed at the fourth phase. We were ranked 4. after first three phases :( Chinese team won 101 points in sport competition for the tank crews.

I am gonna need a English source on this thing & what how did India performed

Just nothing hilarious about it....... simply the use of T-72 tanks was to make a "level playing field" for all the teams. If you can understand what that means?

Now since the Chinese Team was unable to operate the T-72s OR insisted on bringing their own tanks; they were allowed to bring the Type-96 tank.

But that now changes the whole appearance. What can be seen is Chinese Team and a Chinese Tank competing against some other International Teams all using the same T-72 Tanks which happen to be Russian. And the results will be seen in a similar light.

Now it makes no sense "to cry and crib" about the rules after having been a party to it earlier already..........
The Sudanese government military used chinese-made 96 tanks easily destroyed of south SudanT72 , has been directly shows 96 A powerful

After so much boasting from the Indians and bragging about their T-72, they ended up eliminated. Probably they were dead last overall. Just so jealous of China ;) Actually, they are lucky their tank didn't blow up during the competition and kill everybody on board like their navy does.

Any links? I thought they were more interested in upgrading the Al-Khalid.
It's unofficial link first noticed by yours truly .. someone posted this image other thread. imgur: the simple image sharer

In phot Pak defence attache to China is carrying a letter from GHQ with pak army interested in buying 300 type99 tanks.. look close... yeah very bad, sloppy information leakage! this deserve a thread .. but it will be closed anyways
looks like pak wants heavy tanks to counter Arjun Mk2s

I highly doubt that Type 99 will be for sale anytime soon. Just like US are not selling M1A2 and Russian exported T-90 is downgraded signficantly, China isn't about to sell its top of the line equipment.

Plus, type 99 isn't exact suitable for Pakistan's needs. Type 99's firepower over Type 96 or MBT3000 means it can crack open M1A2 or Russian T-90, but India doesn't have any tank that has nearly as much armor, so it is wasted. Type 99's high speed also doesn't work that well in Pakistan's terrain. Similar, type 99 have much thicker armor than type 96 and MBT 3000, but again, there is nothing in India arsenal that require this kind of defense.

you may be right , but Pak GHQ thinks other way. Also it may not be against India , may be against TTP?

 The OP thought the competition last 1 day and so fast to make such a misled title to boast his own ego.

The Indian team dont even make it to the final. So the title shall be ' Indian tank is inferior to Chinese Type-96A tank.' I can bet the OP will jump off from the hill and killed himeself.
