Currently, work on the Phase 1 of the project is on and the BMC is eyeing a November 2023 deadline. According to BMC data, nearly 70 per cent of works under Phase 1 have been completed.
In 2023, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to take the final step towards initiating the second phase of its ambitious Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) to connect Versova to Dahisar.

Currently, work on the Phase 1 of the project is on and the BMC is eyeing a November 2023 deadline. According to BMC data, nearly 70 per cent of works under Phase 1 have been completed

Phase 1 of the project, 10.58-km long, will connect Nariman Point in the southernmost tip of Mumbai with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) through arterial roads, flyovers and underground tunnels.

Meanwhile, while from Bandra, the Maharashtra State Roads Development Corporation (MSRDC) is constructing the Versova-Bandra Sea Link (VBSL) that will further ease connectivity, the BMC has proposed to build an elevated bridge connecting Dahisar and Bhayander (Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road) in far north Mumbai and a tender for the work has been floated in October.

The Phase 2 of the coastal road project, to be known as Versova-Dahisar Link Road (VDLR), will originate from Versova and extend till the starting point of the Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road, in Dahisar.

As per the BMC blueprint, the 24.29-km stretch has been divided into four packages. Estimated to cost Rs 9,980 crore, BMC is eyeing a five-year deadline for Phase 2.

While the first package of 4.5 km will include elevated roads, a basket bridge and an arterial road built on stilts, it will connect the VBSL interchange in Versova to Lokhandwala.

The second package of 7.48 km will connect Lokhandwala with Mindspace in Goregaon and include a cable-stayed bridge and an elevated road.

The third package of 5.32 km will connect Mindspace with Charkop. It will include an open to sky ramp and an underground tunnel that will extend between Malad and Charkop. The underground tunnel will run below the creeks in Malad and Kandivali and a tunnel boring machine (TBM) will be used for this project. The BMC is also using a TBM for creating an underground tunnel between Girgaon and Priyadarshini Park in Phase 1 of the project.

The fourth package of 6.95 km will include a cable-stayed bridge, a basket bridge and an arterial road.

Civic officials said that tenders will be floated in the first quarter of 2023 and BMC will be the sole planning and implementing body of the Phase 2 work.

P Velrasu, additional municipal commissioner (Projects), said, “We have already floated a tender for the Dahisar-Bhayander Link Road and intend to start work in 2023. This phase will fill a major missing link and bridge the gap between Bandra and Dahisar.”

“This particular phase will reduce traffic congestion in suburban Mumbai by at least 70 per cent and create direct connectivity between north and south Mumbai. The first phase of the coastal road project will be finished by next year so it’s time to go ahead with Phase 2, since the volume of traffic between island city and the suburban belt will increase after Phase 1 is completed,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dhaval Shah from the Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizen’s Association said the BMC should ensure that the toll tax is not exorbitant, prohibiting the common people from using the coastal road. “The toll rates need to be subsidised so that it encourages people to use this connector,” he added.

Mumbai: Mumbai is seeing a surge in its infrastructure. All of these forthcoming infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Navi Mumbai airport, world-class highways, and a metro system, would accelerate the economic expansion of Mumbai and Maharashtra. A number of infrastructure projects are scheduled to be finished this year.
Here are 6 of the major infra projects in 2023-24 that will be a game-changer for Mumbai -

1. Mumbai Metro:
Mumbai residents will have a lot of relief in the next year as two new metro lines, 2A and 7, which are color-coded as the yellow and red lines, respectively, are anticipated to be completely operational in January
Dahisar to DN Nagar, Andheri West, and Metro Line 7 to Andheri East will be served by Metro Line 2A and 7, respectively.

Aarey to BKC, the first phase of Metro Line 3's construction, will be operationalized by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) in 2023.
Metro Line-3 is a 33.5-km-long underground corridor along Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ and would connect Mumbai’s key financial hubs, such as Nariman Point, BKC, Lower Parel, Airport, SEEPZ and MIDC.

2. Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL):
The longest sea bridge in India, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), is scheduled to open in December 2023. The maritime link, which connects Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, cuts the current two-hour travel time between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to only 20 minutes.
91% of MTHL's building work had been finished as of December 2022. The project is being carried out by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) (MMRDA).

3. Mumbai Beautification:
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has laid the cornerstone for 500 projects included in this 1700 crore rupee initiative. The project calls for the beauty of traffic islands, mural painting on walls, beach and garden lighting, and fort beautification. Additionally, 10,000 restrooms would be built in slum areas. By March 2023, the State Government hopes to have finished the project.

4. Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor:
The high-speed rail network, which would pass via Mumbai to reach Ahmedabad and Pune, will include the 650-kilometer bullet train project. The estimated cost of the project is INR 1.1 lakh crore. The Mumbai BKC will serve as the starting point for the corridor's bullet trains, which will go to Virar, Thane, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati

The demand for residential, retail, and commercial real estate will rise in a number of ways as a result of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project.

5. Coastal Road Mumbai:
The 10.58 kilometre coastal road that connects Nariman Point to Bandra-Worli Sea Link has over 70% of Phase 1 finished. Its deadline is November 2023, and it is connected via flyovers, subterranean tunnels, and arterial roadways. The coastal road will mostly be built in two parts. The first phase's Princess Street Flyover at Marine Lines to BKC stretch is 10 kilometres long. One of the projects in the second phase is the marine link between Versova and Bandra. By November 2023, the project is anticipated to be done. Along this coastal road, there will be additional recreational amenities including bike lanes, a marine promenade, outdoor theatres, playgrounds, and much more.

6. Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA):
In order to meet the expanding demand for air travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is implementing the NMIA international airport project (MMR).
The project's scope involves building an international airport that can accommodate at least 60 million people annually (MPPA) and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo annually.
To complete the deadline of December 2024, work is proceeding at a fast pace on the Navi Mumbai airport
