Danish FM’s trip 1st high-level India visit since Kim Davy case
India has overcome the Kim Davy hurdle, as New Delhi welcomed Denmark's foreign minister Anders Samuelson on Monday, the first high-level political visit after India downgraded diplomatic ties with the Scandinavian country in 2011. Samuelson, here on a five-day visit, will meet PM Narendra Modi in Hyderabad on Tuesday as well as speak at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

He met foreign minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday. Giving a readout of the meeting, the MEA spokesperson said, "The discussions between the two ministers focused on building of cooperation in the areas of trade and investment, science and technology, environment and renewable energy, shipping, food processing, healthcare, culture and tourism."

The first sign of a serious thaw came when Denmark was the partner country at the Vibrant Gujarat meet in January. Denmark had also participated in the 2015 meet but the Indian side had held out for a deal on Kim Davy before opening up ties at a higher level.
In the last couple of years, both sides have worked to reach an understanding, though what that entails is not yet clear. Denmark was also the partner country at the recent Food Summit in Delhi, and Air India started direct flights to Copenhagen.

India had downgraded diplomatic ties with Denmark when in July 2011, Copenhagen refused to appeal against the decision of a lower court rejecting the extradition of Niels Holck Nielsen, alias Kim Davy, to India in the Purulia arms drop case.
