End Sale of Defence Equipment to Pakistan: US Think-Tank

WASHINGTON: Ahead of the visit of Pakistan army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, a top US think-tank on Thursday asked the Obama Administration to end sale of any defence equipment to the country if it is not willing to "rein in terror".

"The US should demand that Pakistan meet its obligations as a state to tackle terrorism emanating from its territory, in both India and Afghanistan," the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a top American think-tank, said in a report.

"If Pakistan is not willing to rein in terror, Washington should be prepared, at minimum, to end US taxpayer funding for defence equipment sales and reimbursement of coalition support funds," CFR said in the report prepared by top American thinkers drawn from various sectors including Alyssa Ayres, Ajay Banga, Nicholas Burns, Ashley Tellis, Charles R Kaye, among others.

Recognising the challenge to US-India relations posed by US policy toward Pakistan, as well as the drag on India's rise presented by the risk of conflict with Pakistan, the Task Force report recommends that India-for the sake of its own future-pursue an improved relationship with Pakistan.

In parallel, the Task Force asked the US to demand that Pakistan tackle terrorism and prepare to cease US funding for defence sales and coalition support funds should Pakistan prove unwilling, said Richard N Hass, CFR president.

The US is planning to sell eight new F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan. The new fighter planes will add to Pakistan's sizeable force of fighter jets which include more than 70 F-16s and dozens of French and Chinese attack aircraft.

In its more than 90-page report, the Task Force found that US policy towards Pakistan is one of the main challenges to India-US relationship.

Indian officials remain skeptical that the US can ever fully be trusted as a security partner when they see Washington appear to acquiesce to Islamabad's continued inaction on terror groups that have targeted India and the US, the report said.

The CFR report comes days before Gen Sharif's visit to the US during which he is likely to meet top American defence, military and political leadership.

@Oscar @haviZsultan @Horus @Viper0011. @MastanKhan

Again question marks over the article as its from Indian sources, Is the US think tank smoking hashish, seriously they need to get a life, All these army operations in FATA and the ongoing Zarb e Azb which has reduced terrorism by more than 70 per cent, and if terrorism is a problem elsewhere in other countries then that is not our problem they should learn to deal with it. Even if US stops arms sales we have other alternatives.

@haviZsultan You have written this in another thread

I do not see things as rosy either. After Bin Laden raid Indian views clearly resonate in America. They are not in favor of or supportive of the Pakistani stand. Constant such allegations and aggressive comments prove this. US is a difficult partner and it is slowly gravitating towards India. If not stopped Pakistan will become isolated.

1) :yahoo: Quoting IBN  !! These fools write for BJP / RSS follower's consumption. Use a better source please.

2) The US "Think Tanks" are business organizations like the rest of the media. If one organizations has 4 Indian board members out of 8 or less, (which is where Indians with $$$$ are focusing on now a days, to pay their way to get onto boards), so with that influence, getting a report or two isn't a big deal. The results are in front of everyone, the US is selling more -16's and Viper heli's to Pakistan . So you can really see how big of a deal these "Think Tanks" opinions are. They are kind of some of our think tanks at PDF. Some of them write stuff and you just wonder how far off reality they can be.

The US government doesn't run on "Think Tanks" or influential people's monies. When there are strategic and national security interests involved, the Congress and other US government departments and agencies involved, have the brightest law makers who went to the top schools, and know when and how to make the right decisions. Think Tanks just become a report publishing company and you already know each report will have its own element of lobby behind it :enjoy:

But you must see that this Report has been written by Council for Foreign Relations
which has a standing and importance of its own

Indian Media has only reported it

Council on Foreign Relations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And consider the TIMING of the report Just days before
gen Raheel Sharif is coming to Washington

Nothing might happen immediately but it does portend to a
downgrade in the US Pakistan relationship in future

End sale of defence equipment to Pakistan = Give secrets of US military equipment to China & Russia :D

Riiiiiiight!!!! Everything has a standing importance of its own. My Penis does too. But only for me and the other person I am with!! So this report has an impact on the publisher and the lobbyists. There are other internal strategies where the US and Pakistani relations will grow much stronger. Check out the meet and greet of NS and his family in the US trip.

There were human rights reports and arrest orders by a NYS court to arrest Modi under genocide he's conducting inside India. Apparently he STILL came and did business and left. It's the SAME for Pakistan.

Take your silly propaganda elsewhere, its becoming annoying quiet frankly. You people need to pay attention to the worst human rights crisis your country is going through besides the basterds in ISIS. You have real serious human rights isues in India, with innocent minorities getting butchered everyday. Here you are, indulging yourself in US-Pak relationships over a paid "Think Tank" report.

I can write a report and mail it to the Congress a day before you wanted to come to the US, naming it "Stephen Cohen from PDF should be banned at the airport" and give them great rationale, and call my organization as a "Think Tank". Does that mean shiit to the decision maker??? HELL NO!!

You are NOT MAKING any sense here

It would be better if Pakistan starts getting its own Pro Pakistan REPORTS
written by such eminent Think Tanks like Council for Foreign Relations or some
other such institution rather than getting piqued at me

It would be better that you have some strategy in mind like @Oscar

@Oscar you have written this in another thread

The only way to stop this would be either to spill the entire beans on Bin Laden.. which would leave Obama in serious trouble... or start paying off lobbyists and ride the Malala wave. Her father needs to be given a danda to get in our line as he is the one controlling her PR push.

Would you be kind enough to elaborate on the Osama spilling beans thing

I am making a LOT of sense. You just don't want to accept it as it butchered your little anti-Pakistan proxy imagination you were trying to create.

On how to fix this? You can't!!!! Pakistan has been involved with too much activity since 2000 that it'll take time to clear it up. In a few years, as Pakistan rises from an economic standpoint and the US investors pour their hearts out into the Pakistani market (which Bloomberg and others are suggesting), all this will go away.

Don't you worry. It'll be just like Modi, he went to the UK, had thousands of protester call him Mass-Murderer and a Hitler and a Killer. Guess what? He still did business deals with hundreds of millions of pounds, and the SAME human rights champion British government ignored all of his human rights violations, as if it never happened.

As Pakistan grows economically, it will be the same for them. The bad past will start to fade away, supplemented by some lobbyists in the West :enjoy:.
