Energy Minister Katz: We will double the amount of water we supply to Jordan
Today, Israel supplies its neighbor to the east with 100 million cubic meters per year, and according to the minister, the addition will come from water desalination; Israel Katz said these words during a ceremony held by the Mekorot company in preparation for the connection of the facility in Shork that will increase the amount of desalinated water in Israel by 200 million cubic meters per year to 800 million

"By the end of the year, Israel will sign an agreement to double the volume of water supplied to Jordan, from 100 million cubic meters per year to about 200 million cubic meters. The addition will come from desalinated water," said Energy Minister Israel Katz at a ceremony held today (Tuesday) by the Mekorot company under his management of Amit Lang, with the completion of the preparations for the connection of the desalination plant in Shurk that is being built these days.

The cost of the connection infrastructure of the facility in Shork includes an investment of approximately NIS 550 million, and will allow the absorption of an additional 200 million cubic meters. The facility in Shork will be the sixth of its kind in Israel, and it will allow the increase of the amount of desalinated water from 600 million cubic meters per year to about 800 million cubic meters. Today, two-thirds of the water in Israel originates from desalination plants, when with the Sorek connection and another plant planned to be built near the rivers, more than 90% of the water in Israel will be from desalinated sources.

The memorandum of understanding for the agreement to increase the supply of desalinated water to Jordan was signed in December 2021 by former Minister of Energy Karin Alharr under Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. This supply, in return for payment, began with the peace agreement in 1994, when it was determined that Israel would transfer 50 million cubic meters to the Kingdom each year, from the Kinneret water. Today it is a four times higher amount than the amount determined 30 years ago, in the shadow of the climate crisis that led to a severe shortage of water reservoirs in various parts of the world.

One of the main concerns in Jordan is that a lack of water will destabilize the government. And in its northern neighbor, one of the reasons for the outbreak of the civil war in Syria was apparently a lack of water supply to farmers in the country. The lack of water damaged the wheat crops in the country, which led 2-3 million farmers from the villages in Syria to move to the cities. The infrastructures of the cities were not ready to receive the new residents, and collapsed.
The next step planned as part of the agreement is the construction of a solar field in Jordan (a prosperous agreement) that will provide green electricity to
Israel.
