The Foreign Office is investigating reports that members of a British family have been shot dead in Pakistan. Three people from Nelson in Lancashire reportedly died in the incident in a village in the district of Gujrat in north east Pakistan.

They have been named locally as Ms Tania Yousaf, Mr Mohammad Yousaf and Mr Pervaze Yousaf.

A Foreign Office spokesman said it is investigating reports of the shooting in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A statement from Lancashire police said the force had been informed of the incident.

"Three members of a family from Nelson, who were visiting the country for a wedding, were killed in a shooting accident," it said in a statement.

"The circumstances surrounding the deaths are unclear at this time but police in Lancashire are liaising with the authorities in Pakistan to ascertain exactly what has happened.

"Officers are speaking with the family members in Nelson and and they are being offered support at this difficult time."

GEO television reported that four men, three of them armed, opened fire on the victims.

It said two other people were also killed alongside the three family members.

A Facebook page has been set up for people to pay their tributes Tania.
