LAHORE: Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has ordered the transfer of Food Secretary Zaman Wattoo.

“Taking a strict action on misstatement and committing misconduct in the sugar crisis, CM Naqvi has ordered immediate transfer of Secretary Food Zaman Wattoo,” a handout said on Thursday.

The CM also ordered the Chief Minister’s Inspection Team to conduct a comprehensive inquiry in this regard. Irrigation Secretary Wasif Khursheed has been assigned the additional charge of secretary food.

A couple of days ago, the Punjab caretaker government blamed a Lahore High Court (LHC) order for a steep increase in the price of sugar, saying that due to restrictions on the government to monitor the supply chain of the commodity it failed to stop the smuggling of sugar to a neighbouring country.

According to a report presented to a meeting presided over by the CM, the sugar mills and speculators had been charging Rs180 per kg against the ‘very fair notified retail price’ of around Rs100 per kg.

“Since May this year (when the stay was granted by LHC) about 1.4 million metric tons of sugar has been sold by the sugar mills at an average of an additional Rs40 per kg. The sugar mills and brokers/dealers/speculators have thus extorted Rs56bn extra amount solely because of the stay order,” the report says.

The “provincial authorities are unable to check movement of sugar and smuggling to Afghanistan through Balochistan due to the stay order”.

Corruption mafia along with sold out judges at it again. Corrupt sugar mafia to be more precise.

Surplus sugar production but still looting the masses.

With GHQ & COAS running things now, there should be no excuses for failure to stop the sugar mafia, power theft, shutter down strikes to avoid taxes, smuggling, taxing the undocumented economy, etc.

If COAS solves these problems, I'll probably become his fan.

Haha bechara secretary made the scapegoat.

Everyone and their mother knows what the real issue is, but secretary ko raghar do.

Only in Pakistan that the same people give permission to themselves to export sugar based on estimates given by themselves, and then they themselves complain of a shortage, and then they themselves get permission to import as well. And these people are your prime minister, ministers, relatives, and whatnot.

Looto jitna loot saktay ho mulk ko is say pehle kuch lootnay ko na bachay.

This happened right under Establishment’s nose.

The Zardaris, Sharifs, Tareens will run circles around the duffers, make no mistake.

It will be good for public health to reduce sugar consumption. The government should fix a price of 300 rupees per kilogram and export excess sugar. The money can be used to import wheat when needed. Government should promote growing healthier foods like fruits and vegetables instead of water intensive crop like sugar cane.

Supporting corruption is not the way forward. The government is supposed to regulate industrial practices and make sure that industrialists are not exploiting masses.

Then electricity should be 1000 pkr per unit.
there will be no death due to electricity current..

Sugar prices are cheaper in India than in Pakistan.

There is a reason why Zardaris, Sharifs, Tareens are in the sugar business. They make tons of money while enacting laws to encourage anti competitive behavior and gain bumper profits at the people’s expense.

Again a rule of law problem. Munir thinks he can solve the problem by bringing $25 bn from Saudis into a bottomless pit.

They should also increase the price to 100 rupees per Kilogram or more and encourage people to eat complex carbohydrates, proteins, fruits and vegetables (by subsidizing the prices, if needed, to say, 30 rupees per kilogram or less) instead of sugar and fats. This is far cheaper than trying to buy more CAT or MRI machines.

If the army is sincere then drain the swamp before any new investment.

Excess sugarcane by products are used to produce Gasohol that is mixed with petrol (5-10% mix).

Countries like Thailand have been using this strategy divert excess production to control oil prices.

Pakistan sugar industry in collusion with bureaucracy on the other hand is manipulating the state into exporting supposedly excess sugarcane only to import it later. A dumb template which is easy to identify but no one cares to solve the root cause.

@Olympus81

Good suggestions, as usual. Incidentally, India has already achieved a little over 10% doping of petrol with ethanol. In the next stage, India iintends to push it upto 20% over the next 3-4 years. Flex fuel based cars (which can use upto 100% ethanol ) are also on pipeline.

There are exciting possibilities with sugarcane
Use pressmud to produce compressed biogas (already started in india), fermented organic manure and biopotash.
Use bagasse and cane trash and tops to produce second generation ethanol (very expensive currently though) and in future bio diesel and synthetic jetfuels (by biomass gassification)

Regards
