Footprints: a heartbreaking sight

QUETTA: Nestled deep in the midst of towering mountains, Quetta’s historic tourist point Hanna Lake has completely dried up. Cracks have started to appear in the lakebed as there has been no rainfall here for months. “The natural cycle of rainfall has been severely affected as a result of deforestation,” Niaz Khan Kakar, a well-known environmentalist, tells Dawn.

Tourists flocking to enjoy the scenic beauty of this fabled lake are instead treated to the sight of small dead fish ringing the edges of the dried lake. “It is heartbreaking to see these dead fish,” says Tayyaba, a teenager from Jacobabad, Sindh.

And yet, the area around Hanna Lake reverberates with the sound of lilting Pashto music and the tinkling laughter of young tourists, including a large number of women and children. It is a mellow Friday and a crowd of youngsters have gathered at the centre of the lake dancing to the beat of the Darya (a hand-held drum).

Hanna Lake was built by the British in 1894 with the objective of maintaining the water table, to recharge the Karezes (an ancient irrigation system), surrounding springs and to provide water for agricultural purposes. At that time, there was no concept of tube wells and wells were being dug in and around Quetta to pump water for drinking and agricultural purposes.

Every summer, tourists from across the country and various parts of Balochistan throng Hanna Lake for respite from the scorching heat. “We have come to enjoy the fresh air of Quetta,” says Ehsanaullah Khosa, a tourist from Jacobabad.

There was a time when tourists could take boats into the lake and enjoy the idyllic atmosphere. That is not the case anymore. A group of tourists stands at the edge of the lake staring down morosely at three abandoned boats. “Last year, we took a boat to the centre,” Muhammad Ajmal, who lives in Quetta, says. “We are frustrated...the government must do something to bring back the beauty of Hanna Lake.”

The lake had provided nesting grounds for migratory birds from Siberia till the 1980s. But unchecked hunting and water scarcity drove them off with the passage of time.

Gone are the days when migratory birds used to beautify Hanna Lake, says Amjad Rasheed, who heads the Taraqee Foundation (TF), a non-governmental organisation. The mountains ringing the lake were once the stomping grounds for livestock and other animals, but as the lake dried up, so did the grass and vegetation.

It is ironic that Hanna Lake, built by the British, would one day dry up for want of attention from local governments.

It can help maintain the depleting water table of the area if it is full of water, recharge the dried springs and karezes and provide water for farming, Mr Rasheed says.

The water table in Quetta and parts of northern and central Balochistan is getting depleted at a rate that is alarming. Experts believe that mandatory plantation could offset the lack of rainfall and the drought-like conditions. “Maximum plantation can mitigate the dangers of drought,” Mr Kakar points out.

Local communities need to be made aware about the benefits of plantation and forestation, he adds.

Environmentalists warn that Balochistan is prone to natural disasters and a rapid climate change could have devastating consequences.

They predict an apocalyptic scenario for Quetta in which the looming threat of drought would stoke migration on a massive scale. “By 2030, people will not be migrating from Quetta due to terrorism but will be driven by scarcity of water,” says Mr Kakar, who heads the Quetta section of the Forest Department.

I read in Pakistan a HArd Country, that locals still use wasteful techniques for irrigating lands in Quetta region, i.e flooding their lands instead of using drip irrigation, part of the problem is this mentality. They need to be educated and trained. Also, water recycling system should be put in place on emergency basis to help alleviate the situation

Its sad to see dried up Hanna lake.

That's true... and much more. We in Pakistan live like primitive people.
If you go to street its a kiosk all around, congested and unorganized traffic, leading to waste of petrol and time and health.
Resources are being wasted without planning, sub-standard and ill planned construction all around, humans living at risks of their lives in week structure houses and dirty sarroundings.
Water table has gone down all over the country due to blockade of river waters by India.
Public behave uncivilized. All what they have been chasing is democracy because, this is what media has drilled in their heads.

This is the real reason that your country will continue to face water shortage. Pakistan either needs to beat India in a war or add canal projects to cpec enabling diversion of water from Tibet to baluchistan.

This is highlighted in the recent construction of Green Line metro bus project in Karachi, wide 4 lane roads have been reduced to congested 2 lane roads, leading to constant traffic jams, they have also destroyed the entire green belt, and have cut down all the trees and plants.

The thing that can be done now is to recycle and reuse water, and install massive desalination plants powered by solar power plants in Balochistan. And to plant as many trees as possible up river to prevent surface run off, and cutting of the ground by rivers, thus preventing a lot of silt from flowing into the dams and causing reduced space for water storage.

In order to beat India in war, Pakistan need to get rid of democracy.
As long people would continue to prefer inept and corrupt politicians, over army generals, they would continue to suffer.

Many years ago, I stated Pakistan need install huge desalination all along the coast of Baluchistan, and there was a plan of Musharraf to do that, but than we exchanged all of the growth with democracy.

In addition to that we need to draw-up regulations about use of resources and how to behave in public and in populated neighbor hood.
In past 15 years, this nation have become more Indian than Pakistani.

Politics is south Asia is mostly dynastic where as army selection is almost completely merit based. So, military rule does have some advantage. But in case of Pakistan India loc dispute, it is Pakistan army which takes all the decisions. Even kargil was started and stopped by army. Nawaz was just the scapegoat so that people do not question back down by army. So, if army really feels that it has any chance then it will attack irrespective of who is ruling Islamabad

Hero of Kargil war was Indian PM, who risked to expose covert India-US relations, and managed to entrap Nawaz Sharif.

So Musharraf started it without telling government and later Nawaz scolded him and asked to pull back army. Is this your story?

This is the right time to dig lake and increase its capacity so in future it can stock more water

I've been there .
I don't know what is so breath taking about it .

It's just like a ganda paani of a goath. Looks kinda better when it's raining otherwise just a dusty looking water in middle of mountains .

Water shortage is not an issue that concerns Indians, with all that cow fluid around in India.

Our govt's priorities have been very different rather anti-development and pro-corruption. While the world has gone forward, Pakistan have essentially gone backward especially during the farcical and false democracy or corruptocracy.

We have badly failed to modernise the agriculture. There are very few agricultural-research institutions in the country and whatever their output is, mostly stays confined in the labs and experimental farms. The literacy and especially in the technical field remains abominably low. A visionary government is required to implement modern technologies related to the agriculture on emergency basis and educate the farmers using modern and innovative methods (involving multimedia) that produce results in months...not years.

Forget any development in the short term, The present chaotic government is too busy defending their corruption, since Godfather has been dethroned, They are too busy in slandering peoples private lives rather than concentrating on most urgent issues, such as clean drinking water, providing non stop electricity, expanding agriculture, etc.

irrelevant issue
people of Pakistan need metros flyovers etc

we don't need dams
