LAHORE - President Pervez Musharraf has declared that in a bid to catch up the developed world sooner than later by making giant leaps in science and technology disciplines, the government has decided to let the foreign universities establish their campuses in the country in collaboration with the Government of Pakistan. This decision, he believed would help Pakistan catch up the world in the area of science and technology for development.
He was addressing the 5th convocation of Government College University Lahore, at its Bokhari Auditorium Wednesday. Governor Khalid Maqbool, Chief Minister, Pervaiz Elahi, Punjab Education Minister Mian Imran Masood and nuclear scientist Dr Samar Mubarakmund, senior academicians, students and their parents were present. The President said in the context of this decision, six agreements have been signed with Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Japan, China, South Korea etc, to achieve the goals in the realm of science and technology within five years time.
Ultimately, he said nine agreements would be signed. “We will accept their Rectors, curriculum and even faculty members if not available in Pakistan. To start with foreign universities will be opened in collaboration with France, Austria and Sweden in Karachi, Lahore and Sialkot respectively.
And in total, four in Punjab and the rest in Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan. Each University will have technical institutes to produce technicians and engineers. This will also provide momentum to GCU and other universities to introduce technical disciplines at their campuses.”
According to Musharraf, Pakistan has cheap human resources, vast land etc which is not available to many countries of the world. They can use these resources also to open industries here. This is a new strategy and a triangle synergy to develop our economy in a galloping way.
He said ‘we are a nation in hurry and instead of walking wanted to run fast. We need revision of curriculum, examination system, removal of dichotomy of English and Urdu, learning of geography, strengthening of primary, secondary and higher education equally with a holistic approach. We need quality of human resources also.’ A nuclear nation’s education front is pathetic’.

That is a very very good development for Pakistan , Congrats

But it could get better with concerted efforts. Let's look to the future and think about how we can get rid of our medieval education system. In my opinion, the reforms in the system need to happen bottom-up. We need to make sure the level of primary education is improved before we go about trying to fix universities. The type of primary education children recieve determines what type of citizens they will be in the future, not so much a university. I think we need to spend at least 10% of the GDP on education.

This is great development!
Earlier this year all 59 existing universities got interlinked domestically aswell as abroad and now foreign campus!
 for Mushy!

There are some problems i see in this, a lot of foriegn education has direct implications on islam teachings as by the mullahs!!!!

This trend of foreign universities opening up branch campuses in other countries is really cool. The UAE and Qatar have followed this trend and Qatar especially has managed to rope in some big institutions like Cornell and Georgetown. Good to see Pakistan not far behind.

all the unversities will have a reaseach institue...this is what we are currently lacking. and the biggest problem we have in our engneering universities is their environment...teacher-student relationship and lack of practical work..

They could also have something like Knowledge Village in dubai....Univ's operating without govt intervention. Helps bring in good univ's...
