French Rafale jets give India more muscle but are ‘no game changer’ – analyst

New Delhi is set to receive a batch of new French-made Dassault Rafale multi-purpose fighter jets this year but that may be ‘too little, too late’ to play a part in the current flare-up with its rival Pakistan, RT has been told.

The jets “should come into India’s inventory by September,” Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa said at a press event on Monday.

Signed in 2016, the deal with Paris-based Dassault Aviation is part of New Delhi’s program to modernize the Indian Air Force (IAF) which is currently phasing out its older aircraft.

News of the brand-new fighter jets arriving this year comes just days after Indian warplanes engaged in open air combat with Pakistan over Kashmir. The IAF lost one MiG-21 Bison in the dogfight and claimed to have shot down a Pakistani F-16 – something Islamabad denied.

The Rafale multirole fighters will enhance India’s capabilities against Pakistan but “it won’t lead to any game-changing moments due to the relatively small number” of jets ordered, Mikhail Khodarenok, a military analyst and retired colonel in Russia’s missile defense forces, told RT.

New Delhi is set to receive 36 aircraft from Dassault which is not enough to achieve supremacy in the sky, the analyst said. Furthermore, integrating the new planes into the IAF, and training pilots to fly them takes time. So, “optimistically speaking, the Rafales will be fully-ready for combat only after several years,” Khodarenok explained.

The Rafales will remain outside of the current flare-up of Indo-Pakistani relations. At best, they will make it to the next conflict – if such occurs.

As for the fighter jets themselves, they “can deploy a wide array of weapons and have advanced avionics,” the expert told RT, adding that the jets will replace the older Dassault Mirage 2000s, used by India “mostly against ground targets.”

Along with the Dassault Mirage 2000s, the bulk of the IAF is made up of Russian-made Su-30s, along with various models of MiG fighters. Islamabad, meanwhile, has Dassault Mirage III and Mirage 5 fighters, the US-made F-16s, and the Chinese Chengdu J-7s, as well as JF-17 Thunder jets developed jointly by China and Pakistan.

I've heard the French are demanding that the IAF not use the Rafales against the PAF in case it destroys the aircraft's reputation and future sale prospects.

Similarly, LM now wants assurances that if F21s are sold to India, they only be used for national day fly pasts.

The Russians are however willing to sell India more MKIs, because...well, the damage is already done :omghaha:

1. Block 3 will have an AESA radar. It has been described as a 4+ fighter jet.

2. Pakistan will buy Chinese 5th gen fighters ASAP, you can be sure of that.

I agree with point 1 but I don't think we can say Pakistan will buy 5th gen. We don't have the economy or fudnign to do that at this point in time. Maybe after the next 10 years, we might be in a position.

We're not broke lol, we can buy 5th gen fighters. Just not too many, so don't expect us to operate more than 36 anytime soon.

The only Chinese 5th jen jet presently available is the J20 if I am correct? And it can't compete with the F35 or F22. Either way, even if we end up buying it, it wouldn't serve us any advantage since a fleet of 36 won't be given to Pak in 1 year. It will take a few years and then you would have to train pilots and maintain the jets as well which will be expensive regardless of them being Chinese or American.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Pakistan gets new 5th jen jets but only if we can afford it and run it without compromising anything. In the meantime though, we don't require them and our fleet is capable of handling any threat by the Indians (the only problem for us in Asia).

It really doesn't matter which jets they buy. In the hands of Indian fighter pilots the F35, F22 or the Rafael will end up just like the MIG/MKI.

The Indians still haven't understood that Pakistan is no longer bound by limitations put in place for using its jets. Them screaming and lying about the Pakistani F16 is the ultimate proof. They went back to their default nature of complaining to the country/countries they see as new saviours.

Anyone selling Indians weapons must assess the reputation cost. As India will find a way to destroy the reputation of any weapon system. The better the weapon system, the more damage will the Indians inflict.

Giving Indians anything valuable is like casting pearls before a swine.

pilots with shaky hands can fly whatever but will never have a edge, Indians psychologically consider them self inferior to Pakistan and you see the proof of it daily where they try to prove it otherwise...yet without success.
