Operation of an Aircraft carrier has been a goal of the PLAN since the 1970s, as part of the PLAN's ultimate blue-water aspirations. Over the years, China has acquired 4 retired aircraft carriers for study, the Australian HMAS Melbourne and the ex-Soviet carriers Minsk, Kiev and Varyag.

In 2009, for the first time, official Chinese state media quoted Defense Minister Liang Guanglie stating China's intention to build aircraft carriers. Reports state that two 50,000-60,000 ton aircraft carriers are due to be finished by 2015. Su-33, J-10C & J-11C are the aircrafts most likely to be flown from these aircraft carriers.

In mid-2007, Chinese domestic sources revealed that China had purchased a total of 4 sets aircraft carrier landing systems from Russia, and this was confirmed by Russian manufacturers. However, experts disagreed on the usage of these systems: while some have claimed that it is a clear evidence of the construction of an aircraft carrier, others claim these systems are used to train pilots for the future construction.

In August, 2008, Mr. Huang Qiang, the speaker of Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense announced to the public that China at news conference that China had mastered all of the technologies of aircraft carrier and would build aircraft carriers in the future when time was deemed right.

The strongest proof of Chinese aircraft carrier also appeared in 2008, from official Chinese governmental source when the training program of jet fighter pilots for warship captains were resumed in 2008.

PLA Daily published the news of Dalian Warship Academy accepting a total of 50 jet fighter pilots for warship captain training in 2008 and in comparison to the first class that was held more than one and half a decade ago at Guangzhou Warship Academy, the training has been lengthened to four years. Resumption of this plan is viewed by foreign China observers and military analysts as another step of preparation for the aircraft carrier entering service.

In 2008 there have been foreign reports that China will start building two 50,000-60,000 ton aircraft carriers due to be finished by 2015.

there are no aircraft carriers under construction. China has purchased old aircraft carriers they have been using to study. and they may refurbish the Russian aircraft carrier Varyag. though I doubt this since it is actually a old aircraft carrier. I think China would prefer to build their own homegrown carrier. Also so far they will not be buying the Su-33. Talks with Russia on those aircraft broke down amid concerns China would reverse engineer them for their own export market. Like they did with the Su-27.

china won't have any AC in the next 30 years, the relation between mainland and taiwan is on the right way ,don't need AC if there is a China-india war ,when US finish their long hunting list and aim to china, enough AC will jump out of nowhere .......
