The National Transitional Council (NTC) has reported gun battle between forces loyal to the fugitive Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi and revolutionary fighters in the capital of Tripoli.

The two sides exchanged fire in the Abu Salim district, a stronghold of support for Gaddafi, on Friday.

Medics say several people have been injured in the clashes which sent shock waves through the capital. The gun battle broke out after Gaddafi loyalists held a demonstration in the troubled capital.

This is for the first time that serious fighting has broken out between the two sides since the capital city fell into the hands of NTC forces in August.

The developments come as forces loyal to Gaddafi still control large parts of Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte and the desert town of Bani Walid.

NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil has said that at least 25,000 people had been killed and 50,000 others injured during the months-long revolution.

Libya's NTC chairman said on Wednesday that he expected to declare total victory in less than a week, which would pave the way for the formation of a transitional government and elections within eight months.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between government troops and revolutionary forces since mid-February. The deadly conflict has left thousands of people dead and wounded.
