CHENNAI: Two German sailors
were arrested on Tuesday, ten
days after their cargo ship
collided with a fishing boat off
the Chennai coast leading to one
fisherman's death, bringing back memories of the MV Enrico Lexie
case in which Italian marines are
facing trial for killing two
fishermen off the Kerala coast last
year. A city court later released
the German seamen on bail while restraining them from leaving the
shores. Anandan, 45, a fisherman from
Kasimedu, drowned while two of his friends were rescued after cargo vessel MV
Grietj, flying the Antigua Barbuda flag, rammed
into their boat on March 16, around 10 nautical
miles (18.5 km) off the Chennai coast. The Indian
Coast Guard and mercantile marine department
soon zeroed in on the ship. A police officer said Albrecht Wolsgang (46),
captain of the vessel, and Steffen Hinksoth (38),
second officer, were arrested under charges of
causing death due to negligence. The two sailors
are from Munich. While granting bail, the court
directed them to surrender their passports and stay at the Seafarers Club at the Chennai port until
further orders. Sources said an underwater inspection of the
vessel at Chennai port did not yield any visible
evidence of a collision, but there was
circumstantial evidence to arrest the seamen.
International maritime conventions empower the
local police to initiate legal action against a ship involved in an accident within the territorial
waters which stretch to 12 nautical miles (22km)
from the shores. Elaborating on the circumstantial evidence, a
mercantile marine department official said MV
Grietj was the only vessel which was in the area
at the time of the accident. "Moreover, the
vessel's VDR (voyage data recorder) which
should have recorded details of the ship's movement was found to be not working. This
could mean that it had a mechanical fault or it
was tampered with," he said. The two rescued fishermen -Viji (35) and
Santhosh (19)- had said in their statement that
the collision took place after their boat developed
a snag. "Around 4.30am, when we were
repairing the boat, the vessel suddenly appeared
close to us," said Santosh. "We all dived and surfaced after the ship passed. Anandan was not
to be seen." Anandan's body was found floating
in the sea five days later. The ship's owners have
reportedly agreed to pay compensation to
Anandan's family.

What the heck is going on? so many events with EU types in such a short space of time - is this some sort of nasty business going on or just a coincidence or more rigorous policing?

EU trying to mess with us.... 1st Italy then france. Now Germany

I don't know about France, considering it happened in Africa and the country it happened in is in the state of Civil War. Plus the French President pretty much apologized for the incident and assured for an investigation. Unlike the Italians who basically kept the soldiers as hero.

As for the case with the German Sailors from what it seems it was not intentional rather the Fishermen boat was not working and the shipping vessel couldn't avoid the collision. Plus people have to understand that collisions happen all the time just last year I think there was a collision between and IN vessel and a fishing vessel. So till they say that it was intentional I would not pass judgement on the people on the shipping vessel.

I really dono what is happening around our coasts...... Why so many issues... that too with EU????

Nothing more than coincidences. However these coincidences; ie collisions or more correctly running down of small country craft by large ships have been taking place for a long time.
Just that the alleged perpetrators of these are being increasingly apprehended due to AIS, LRIT and VTMS systems being used apart from the VDRs mandatorily fitted on ships. Plus small craft are now carrying VHF comms sets which are used to notify shore authorities speedily in case of mishaps. In earlier days, a boat would be unreported for days before anybody woke up to the fact that it may be lost.

The technical reasons for such collisions are numerous: poorer standards of watch-keeping on Bridges of ships largely due to smaller crews than earlier, greater reliance on equipment such as radar which fail to detect small wooden/FRP craft especially in choppy seas, infringement of "Rules of the Road" by both ships and boats, increasing commercial pressures on both ships and fishing craft whic cause deviations from "good practices of seamanship" etc.

These collisions have been taking place for long; but it is now that one gets to know more about them as well as increasing apprehensions and prosecutions.

Actually EU fellows are getting arrested because of unlike in the past India is more powerful than EU.

Meh, the German FM must be getting rather uncomfortable at the moment if Germany is planning anything clever. Giulio Terzi became the casualty of Italy's machinations. Wonder what Guido Westerwelle will be thinking atm. :azn:

First Italians, now Germans. Indian is flexing its muscle. Soon, India would try to arrest Americans. Such attempt would lead to loss of life unnecessarily for Indians.

An unfortunate isolated incident.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Italy does not have a stable government. Germany has. But I don't think Germans would try to get its sailors back using the underhanded way.
