GIGN elite unit switches sides

France’s GIGN elite intervention unit is to substantially increase its cooperation with India’s National Security Guard (NSG). Joint exercises are currently being put into place by the units’ commands. Members of the NSG, nicknamed the “Black Cats ”, have also recently been training with US’ SWAT teams and Israel’s Sayeret Matkal.

The GIGN/NSG cooperation is a complete turnaround because over the past decade, Pakistan has mostly benefited from France’s anti-terrorism expertise with the GIGN and the RAID training Karachi intervention units. The training stopped last year after the French government expressed its concern that the French-trained crack troops might at some point be deployed against France's new ally, India, or even against France.
