HAL To Deliver More Dhruv Mk. 3 Helicopters

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) soon will hand over five Mk. 3 versions of the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) to the Indian army.

This is in addition to the five Dhruv Mk. 3 helicopters delivered to the service during the just-concluded Aero India 2011 symposium, which marked the first deliveries in a total order of 159 advanced Dhruv variants. HAL says the rest of the helicopters will be delivered in phases over the next five years.

“There were issues with the shortage of spares, which put the brakes on the production activities,” a senior HAL official says. “We have overcome the crisis, and the production plan has picked up momentum now. Ten Dhruvs for the Indian air force [also] will be handed over soon.”

The Mk. 3 variants are powered by Shakti turboshaft engines developed by HAL and Turbomeca. The helicopter underwent high-altitude trials in 2009. “The Mk. 3 sports a new electronic warfare suite, advanced laser warning systems, missile warning systems and electro-optical pods. It has a new-generation vibration-control system in place along with the glass cockpit. It also has an automatic chaff-and-flare dispenser,” the official says.

“The [Indian air force] versions will be tested by pilots from [the] Aircraft System and Testing Establishment,” he adds. “We will also roll out the Mk. 4 variants of Dhruv during [the] 2011-12 period.”

The subject of frequent criticism from Indian media and audit agencies, the Dhruv seems to have finally come of age thanks to strong management principles put in place at HAL’s Helicopter Complex. Insiders say that new computer-aided design and manufacturing features at the production lines, user feedback, and the establishment of a separate maintenance, repair and overall facility have all helped the program.

This is interesting ( the EO pod) any pics of new Mk.3 Dhruv??

+ any news of WSI (armed) Dhruv, when will they be inducted?? We keep being told ALL 74 will be delivered by 2015 but to date I haven't heard of a SINGLE one being inducted

That's because they went the right way at the helicopter field, with getting as much foreign consultancy, ToT, input (however we call it) and learn from them first! We inducted Dhruv, learned lessons through the operational service and with every upgrade reduce the dependence on foreign countries. Only because of this learning curve, we now was able to re-design it to LCH, or develop LUH alone.
LCA instead, planed way too overoptimistic and anything had to be indigenous from the start, that's why it suffered so much throughout the development.

HAL actually has pretty much versions of Dhruv and it seems that they focus on new helicopters to complement Dhruv (LUH, MUH).

The current order includes 54 weaponised Dhruvs — termed Advanced Light Helicopter — Weapons Systems Integrated, or ALH-WSI — armed with anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles, rockets and a 20-millimetre turret gun.

The ALH-WSI is scheduled to begin weapons trials in Orissa in April.

In Siachen, Dhruv proves a world-beater

If you are talking about about that 10-12 ton helicopter, then its not possible to produce a helicopter so quickly. But HAL is saying by 2015 it will be ready. By 2014 LUH and by 2013-2014 LCH.

Is our Dhruv equipped with a voice and data communications suite including VHF, UHF communications, an identification friend or foe (IFF) transponder, secure voice communications, satellite communications and intercom system like the other western choppers ??/ If not, then alot of changes can be made for mk4 and i hope HAL include these so as to improve our network centric warfare capability.

Dhruv has the necessary Comms. Eqpt. in place. However none of the Indian Helos have SatCom. Part of the reason is that they were not intended for world-wide deployment.

i found these videos of dhruv firing rockets and smoking its guns (not sure if it has been posted before)
