Half of India affected by drought

Nearly half of India's districts have been hit by drought that could affect the production of rice, the country's farm minister has said.
Sharad Pawar said 246 districts in 10 states had been declared as drought affected. India has some 600 districts.
Separately, authorities in southern Andhra Pradesh state say they are probing whether the suicides of 20 farmers are linked to the drought.
This monsoon season has brought 29% less rainfall than normal.
Rice production in the country could decline by 10 million tonnes this year because of the drought, Mr Pawar said.
India produced nearly 100 million tonnes of rice during 2008-2009, according to official figures.
"Due to the expected reduced production of rice, there could be pressure on availability and market price," he added.
'In-depth probe'
With food prices rising, Mr Pawar said the government was planning to release wheat and rice from its stocks in the open market to keep prices in check.
Leading economist and member in charge of food at India's Planning Commission Abhijit Sen told a newspaper that he did not "foresee a situation where we need to import food".
Separately, the government in Andhra Pradesh has announced an investigation into the suicides of 20 farmers in a little over a month.
The opposition parties have said the farmers were taking their lives because of the drought.
Chief minister YS Rajashekhara Reddy said officials were "conducting an in-depth probe into all the suicides by farmers to establish the reason".
Monsoon rains are critical to India's farm prospects, which account for a sixth of its economic output.
Up to 70% of Indians are dependent on farm incomes, and about 60% of India's farms depend on rains. Irrigation networks are dismissed by critics as inadequate.
The summer rains are crucial to crops such as rice, soybean, sugarcane and cotton.

I dont know what is the status of irrigation system there in these areas but i was thinking with more dams as compare to us, would it be possible for India to have some good irrigation system in place to avoid such a situation in coming days.

It not just India's water supply . I read somewhere that the whole of Asia's water table has dropped and unless Asia's countries do something about it the will be a lot of food and drinking water shortage in the near future.

though irrigation may be advanced compared to pakistan.. still more than 50% is rain fed.... so not gud....

dude... if people think out of their ignorance that this drought is the curse of those dams cutting water supply to pakistan as some have suggested.. then this drought will only increase the resolve to build more to store precious water...

NO irrigation is not advanced as compared to Pakistan as Pakistan has the best irrigation system in the world thats what the WB and other research studies say.

I was saying that India has more dams as compared to Pakistan so water issue is less grave there than us, so what could be the measures to increase the irrigation despite drought

El nino has added to already existing problems like glacier melts, water table decline. I think there is another cause which may add to shortage of water in south asia. It is well known that Indian subcontinent is pushing against eurasian continent, which is causing frequent earth quakes in the region. Himalayas are growing every year. I think the water from himalaya are draining faster into the oceans!!

We already feeling the effect of rising food prices. Sugar prices are on record level. There is urgent need for co-operation among south asian countries regarding this.

I fully agree with you on this. But I will not give entire credit to GOP because Pakistan blessed with a unique geographical location that helped her to achieve this.

We are working on it to recover from this, with the help of Israel(they are the best in this field). But you can see our hands are bound with two of our beloved neighbours. I know they too have problems, but what to do? leaving this part to you.

Mathoor Thottipalam (near Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, India) is one of Asia's tallest and longest trough bridge. This trough canal carries water for irrigation from one side of the hill to the other.
