Oh man, wish u were there to project these words of wisdom when ussr invaded afghanistan is kuat of warm waters of the arabian sea, they might have avoided the war that led to thier fall because according to ur golden words no sorry ur rare gems about geo politics ussr broke in to pieces for something the didnt actually need...
A little knowledge can be more dangerous than no knowledge. Your perfect example of this. Cold War is over. It's been over for 26 years now.

Soviet Russia was a superpower in contest for global dominance against USA. Soviet Russia was Pakistan's neighbour. Narrow 10 miles Wakhan Corridor separated Pakistan from Soviets. Today Russia has shrunk. Central Asia is free. The former might Soviet Navy is now a rusting floating bucket. Russia has no grand strategic need for warm waters as you put it.

Even the original 'warm waters' argument was dubious but today it is a definitely non sequiter.

'If only wishes were fishes'. The prospect of Soviet Russia and Pakistan post 1947 being together is pure fantasy. Yes, if majority of Pakistani's were like me, secular with left leaning tendancies this might have been possible.

A person is known by the company he keeps. Soviet Russia had partners inside Afghanistan and who were they? Westernized secular Afghans of the PDPA.

You think for a second Pakistan with it's religion frothing from the mouth and just about everything being explained in referance to 'Muslim' would have got along with a socialist, athiest state? You got to be kidding me?

Elsewhere like Syria, Iraq Soviet Russia allied itself with leftist secular forces. No chance of that in a country which dreams in being citadel of Islam.

And who supported the hardline Islamists in Afghanistan. well the picture below says it all. The mullah and Americans were best friends once.

China is even more "Godless" or atheist than Russia. How then can our relationship be so good. Ideology or religion is not necessarily a pre cursor for good relations. Totally different nations can be allies. The bigger question is what do Pakistan and US have in common if Pakistan and Russia don't. I think we need to question our past policies and question why we did not seek relations with other countries.

I believe in secularism too. But I do not believe that our ally has to be an Islamist if we or our government/leadership are Islamists.

Agreed. Which is why Pakistan's relationship until recent time was strictly business. Go find out how many of Pakistan's elite moved to China to live there? Now compare all the Pakistani's in USA. You really think Pakistan could have kept the West if she had joined the Russian camp? Not a chance in hell. You think our sardars, maulanas would have bought houses or sent their kids to Moscow in 1960s or 1950s?

The Chinese embrace was not at the expense of the West. Indeed Pakistan/China/USA got together against Soviet Russia. In short in 1960s you either would go West~China or Soviet Russia. You would not have both of them.

That famous approach by Nixon's America with China and Pakistan in middle was against Russia. How exactly would you have played the Chinese and then kept Soviet Russia?

In short our elite lived/dined/sent their young to the West (many others like me and millions of othes including many members here migrated to the West under this umbrella) but kept a very strict business like dealing with China. Contact was limited to top officials.

Now things are about to change. China/Pak relationship is going mult-idimentional. Gwadar is about to open both countries and we will see how both get on. Somebody is going to have to adjust and I know who that is going to be.

Why rusaia wants to join gawader ? a question :-\
Russia is being aggressively surrounded by NATO. The recent Crimean crisis was a huge ploy to get the peninsula into NATO dominance thus completely choking Russia. All trade to Russia is dependant upon the strait of Bosphorus which is under NATO's eye and NATO can send ships into the black sea as well. So Gwadar or rather access to arabian sea was dreamt by Catherine the Great of Russia some 400 years ago! and its coming to light now.

We gifted a pair of Nice Pistols to the Russian Intelligence Officer and as per tradition, it is a symbol of bond, respect, trust and friendship as well as the support for times to come. :D
That would be the head of FSB or DUMA?

NATO is on war footing against Russia, and there have been NATO exercises exactly for that purpose. In such an event, Russia will have no access to European waters. This move to join CPEC is more strategic than for trade for now. This is likely to result in a major Russian Navy presence in our waters, eventually.

Thanks for explaining :-)
