Pakistan and NZL reached the final of Champions Challenge non of the top teams were in the championship.

I think that Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Austrailia will be the semi finalist.

Indian hockey turns very sick as players revolt
V Narayan Swamy & Michael Joseph, TNN, 9 January 2010, 12:36am IST

BANGALORE/PUNE: India's national game plummeted to a new low as hockey players went on strike at the Balevadi (Pune) national camp on Friday, boycotting the morning session and plotting fresh moves to get their 'dues' from Hockey India.

The players claimed they hadn't got a penny from HI ever since the ad hoc body replaced the KPS Gill-led Indian Hockey Federation last year and alleged that Hockey India hadn't bothered about the ultimatum they had served before leaving for Argentina for the Champions Challenge tournament in December.

"We did not get any positive response to our appeal for dues, match fees and bonuses from Hockey India," players said on Friday. "We were scheduled to train in the morning but decided against it. If we are to wear jerseys with the Sahara logo on them we need to be paid. We will continue the boycott until the issue is resolved."

A furious Hockey India threatened "strict action" against the players for their "gross act of indiscipline". In a letter to chief coach Jose Brasa and coach Harendra Singh, Hockey India president AK Mattoo said it was a matter of great regret that instead of waiting for the outcome of a meeting scheduled for Saturday, the players "maligned us".

However, the players seemed determined to stick to their guns. "We want to be heard and there couldn't have been a better time than this," they said. The World Cup is slated to be held in New Delhi in February-March.

^^^This is a joke! Players are wrong to stage such a blackmail when all eyes are on India for the event next month. This could have been done quietly via a threat and back door diplomacy.

Yaar compare to Indian cricket players these guys are geting peanuts and the association even give them their salary at time too..How can they support their family ??Playing for country and treating like slaves is not fair..Is this kind of treatment can be done against any cricket players?no..these players are asking for their share only ..and no better time than this ...

The story is same on both side , Asian Hockey needs come back with Asian style.
the far right and left wings making cross shorts and center connecting them to goal , short passes in the center etc.

The problem is we stuck in the past while other nations advanced with the help of technology in games and also new methods of playing ..There is no shortage of talents in players in our countries we just have to devalop it and also encourage the game with better salaries and packages

Pakistan hockey player and two officials fined over alcohol, hug

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports Friday fined a national hockey player and two team officials for ‘unethical behaviour’ after pictures circulated of them hugging a woman and apparently drinking alcohol during the Champions Challenge Tournament in Argentina last month. The committee, which met under its chairman Jamshed Dasti, fined forward Rehan Butt Rs 100,000 and team’s coach Shahid Ali Khan and manager Mohammad Asif Bawja Rs 50,000 each. Dasti also instructed Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) director general Amir Hamza Gilani to ensure payment of fine and provide receipts to the standing committee. Pakistan is a conservative Muslim country where men hugging women in public is taboo and even men shaking hands with women is frowned upon. Drinking alcohol is illegal for Muslims.

“Islamic culture does not allow us to hug a lady and have alcohol. Players are ambassadors of their countries and they should never forget this,” Dasti said. Dasti warned Shahid and Bajwa not to get involved in such activities in future. He asked the PHF to devise a code of ethics for players representing Pakistan in international tournaments and ensure its compliance. Pictures run by a Pakistani television channel and posted on the Internet showed one of the men hugging a woman and another apparently drinking a beer. Another picture showed a group of men sitting at a table with glasses in front of them, apparently containing alcohol.

Bajwa told a private TV channel the woman in the photograph was a tournament liaison officer. “All officials and players considered her as our sister,” Bajwa said before the fines were imposed. “The pictures were taken at the end of the tournament, after Pakistan lost in the final to New Zealand, and the woman had put the pictures on her Facebook page,” he added. Hockey is Pakistan’s national sport although the team’s fortunes have waned since it won Olympic gold in 1984. Dasti said the team’s failure at the tournament made the ‘disgusting’ activities that much worse.
