IAF chief: MiG crashes due to pilots’ inexperience

This much crashes happen only because of poor approach, the plane is at low speeds during approach, and hence, more reaction time and less probability of a fatal crash, although other skids and other mishaps might occur.

Could also be that the old aircrafts dont have as safe cockpit as of now.

The problem with mig 21 is - this is a plane which has the highest take off speed and also the highest landing speed. Landing speed is more than 300 miles/HR if i remember correctly. Without appropriate middle stage training with trainers such as Hawks, etc ..rookies just are not equipped enough to handle these landings..
Mig is a great aircraft, but it takes lot of training and mastery to handle these a/c's . The approach of coming low on speeds during landing will not work with a/c like Mig. And finally this is a 4 decade old machine , nothing beats this as a reason for crashes ...

blaming pilots is a good ploy to hide the bad maintinance.

Groan....IAF is flying machines which are easily more than 3-4 decades old, isnt that a testament enough for maintenance ? Have you tried to drive a 30 year old car ? I have , and it sure isnt easy.

Its due to the lack of intermediate and advanced trainers which led to the bypassing of an important phase in rookie pilots training . Leapfrogging from subsonic trainers to mach capable migs is a daunting task for many pilots .

The fault lies squarely with our bureaucracy for taking eons to come to decision regarding buying training aircraft. They think in terms of lower costs , manufacturing clauses etc ...while our pilots pay the price for their delay.

So the defense minister in Rang De Basanti was right after all, Ajay Rathore was a rookie pilot -- Vindication at last.

On a serious note, are the F7-PG operated by the PAF any more modern and sophisticated than the Mig-21's ?

F-7 is different story .they are new air frames some are even 10 years old and migs are 50 years old air frames dear .F-7 has nothing to do with this issue .

the MiG-21 should have been phased out in the early 90's LCA delay and MMRCA delay are 2 reasons why new aircraft have not been brought to replace the MiG-21 its really a lose-lose situation because we keep the old MiG-21 for force levels yet many of these MiG's are ancient in terms of technology and flying them would be like having a pilot try to fight with both hands tied

at least 200 of the MiG-21 should have been upgraded to Bison standard with the rest being phased out we need to phase out non upgraded MiG-21 ASAP or at least put them in reserve because even veteran pilots have said the MiG-21 is a challenging fighter jet to fly and master

she did us well in winning the air war of 1971 but now she has to go the MiG-21 is just too damn old and dangerous to fly nowadays

err......it's not like pilots are crashing the MIGs on purpose and running away....many pilots have been killed....if they are in-experienced then get them the experience!

This is very damning statement from IAF chief and speak true of IAF pilots as being incompetent.MIG-21 is a good aircraft except for the incompetency of the IAF pilot flying it

So is there any plane in our inventory which compares to the state of Mig-21's, FT-5's or the recently phased out A-5's maybe ?

india should keep mig21 in operation- maybe for kamikaze type operations?-

IAF should upgrade or retire MIG-21 immediately, flying these birds is like asking the pilots to carry out a suicide mission, too cruel

How about the chief speaking the truth??

The IAF is short of trainers.. which leads to pilots not having the required experience being sent to obsolete jalopies.
He should truthfully tell them that the IAF is being forced to murder its pilots thanks to the MoD's snails pace procurement process.
Or perhaps, he should simply go and tell Anna.

Migs are flown by rookies while senior ones are flying MKI's and M2K's...

The damn thing needs to be phased out ASAP.. Otherwise newer pilots will be a rare breed.

Absolutely wrong. There are 23 year old MKI pilots as well.Even a rookie can be good provided he has got enough training. The problem is the lack of adequate trainers due to which pilots are thrown into the cockpit of jets at an early stage. The MiG-21 unlike the MKI is not that high tech and is unforgiving if you make mistakes.every squadron has rookies and veterans. It's not jet specific.Rookies can be exceptional if they have good training. An Israeli 21 years old pilot can whoop the *** of a 45 years old Arab .That's because they spend a lot more time in the air and are naturally more aggressive.

Jee karta hai Maa, Behen ki gaaliyan de doon is IAF Chief ko & unn saare Politicians & Bureaucrats ko, jo MMRCA procurement me itna der laga rahe hai.

And unke karan humare Trained pilots apni Jaan gawan rahe hai.

Ma............:angry::hitwall:
