Pakistan cancel pre-World Cup Dubai trip due to visas delay

PCB confident team will be able to travel to Hyderabad ahead of warm-up game against New Zealand

Pakistan's plans for a pre-World Cup team-bonding trip to Dubai have been cancelled as the team was still awaiting visas to travel to India as on Friday.

The Pakistan squad was due to fly to the UAE early next week and stay for a couple of days before flying to Hyderabad, ahead of their first warm-up game against New Zealand on September 29. Instead, Pakistan now plan to fly out of Lahore to Dubai early next Wednesday and fly to Hyderabad from there. Although one official said the situation was "alarming", there does appear to be general confidence that the visas will arrive in time for Pakistan to travel. The application for visas is understood to have been made over a week ago.

As of now, ESPNcricinfo understands, Pakistan are the only one - of nine sides traveling to India for the World Cup - still awaiting visas. The delay does highlight the complex and tense political backdrop against which the team is traveling to India. Travel between the two countries for citizens on either side is extremely limited because obtaining visas is an arduous and often fruitless process.

They deserve this treatment. Should’ve boycotted World Cup for payback for Asia Cup. PCB has no shame and honor. Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf are a joke.

Fucking disgrace and the low life Indians as always playing games before they’ve begun

Hopefully Pakistan will grow a spine and tell India to stick it up themselves nasty fucking low life scums

Pakistan yet to get their visas less than 48 hours before flying out to India

The PCB has written to the ICC asking about possible steps to deal with the inequitable treatment

The PCB has expressed its displeasure to the ICC over the delay in the Pakistan team obtaining visas for travel to India for the World Cup, and warned of the adverse impact it could have on Pakistan's preparation for the tournament. The team is scheduled to fly out early morning on Wednesday, but the visas had still not been issued to the squad as of close of working hours on Monday.

The Pakistan board has been in contact with the ICC about the matter, but on Monday, less than 48 hours before the team's scheduled departure and with no visas in hand, it has written to the ICC, saying that such inequitable treatment to Pakistan - they are the only traveling team without visas at the moment - would not be accepted.

The PCB has asked the ICC about the steps the global body is taking to resolve the situation, as well as whether written guarantees had been provided by the hosts - the BCCI, in this case, or the Indian government - that visas would be provided to all participating nations.

As things stand, Pakistan are due to fly out to Dubai in the early hours of Wednesday (September 27), transit there, and then arrive in Hyderabad on Wednesday evening. They are scheduled to play their first warm-up game on Friday, against New Zealand.

Sri Lanka's Hasaranga 'unlikely' for World Cup with hamstring injury

All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is "highly unlikely" to play in the 50-overs World Cup in India despite Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) making every effort to aid his bid to recover from a hamstring injury, according to media reports citing a team doctor

All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is "highly unlikely" to play in the 50-overs World Cup in India despite Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) making every effort to aid his bid to recover from a hamstring injury, according to media reports citing a team doctor.

The spin-bowling all-rounder sustained the injury during the Lanka Premier League last month and missed the Asia Cup, where Sri Lanka finished runners-up behind India.

"We are consulting foreign doctors to see whether he needs surgery or not," SLC medical panel chief Arjuna de Silva told the Sunday Times newspaper. "If he does, he will be out for at least three months. "At the moment, the situation is not that great and it’s highly unlikely if he can play the World Cup."

Hasaranga's absence would be a major blow to the 1996 champions considering the 26-year-old was the leading wicket-taker in the last two T20 World Cups.

Sri Lanka have until Sept. 28 to announce their 15-member squad for the World Cup, which begins on Oct. 5. De Silva said the SLC were doing everything possible to try to get Hasaranga fit to play some matches in the World Cup.

"Since he is a key weapon in our attack, we are looking at other options to see how best we can get his services at least for important games. "All that depends on the opinions of the consultant to whom we are trying to show his reports."

Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera also risks missing the World Cup with a pectoral muscle injury. "Chameera is bowling at the moment but still complains of pain," de Silva said. "We have consulted a doctor in the United Kingdom to see how best we could treat him."

Fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala have been ruled out of the 2023 ODI World Cup with injuries.

They have been replaced by Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams in South Africa's 15-man squad for the tournament that begins in India on October 5.

Nortje has a suspected stress fracture of the back after experiencing spasms during the second ODI against Australia earlier this month. Magala, who played only the third ODI against Australia and went for 1 for 46 in four overs, has a left-knee injury.

"It's hugely disappointing for Anrich and Sisanda to be missing out on the 50-over World Cup," South Africa's coach Rob Walter said. "We sympathize in their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action.

"This provides an opportunity for Andile and Lizaad on the global stage. Both players have been part of our winter programs as well as having represented South Africa in the recent white-ball tour against Australia. They offer great skill sets and we're excited to have them complete the 15-player squad for this year's World Cup."

Phehlukwayo played in the second and fifth ODIs against Australia. While he did not make much of an impression in the first game, he scored 38 off 19 balls to finish the innings strongly in the series finale and then took 1 for 44. Williams played three of the five matches, taking 3 for 44, 1 for 17 and 0 for 24.

Nortje's absence is a major blow for South Africa as he is their quickest bowler with substantial experience in India, where he plays for Delhi Capitals in the IPL. He played in the Major League Cricket tournament in the USA over the South African winter and was rested for the T20Is against Australia. He was then ruled out of the first ODI but played the second, bowling only five overs before leaving the field. He missed the third game after he was sent for scans and was then ruled out of the series.

Magala had not played any cricket since splitting the webbing in his hand at the IPL in early April and was subsequently ruled out of the T20Is against Australia with infrapatellar tendinopathy - pain in the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin bone. He experienced discomfort in the knee again after playing one ODI against Australia.

South Africa leave for India on September 23, and play their warm-up games against Afghanistan on September 29 and New Zealand on October 2. Their first game of the tournament is against Sri Lanka on October 7.

The Pakistan cricket squad lands in Hyderabad, India on Wednesday for the ICC World Cup.

The Pakistan squad landed in India’s Hyderabad on Wednesday to participate in the ICC World Cup 2023.

The national team flew to India via Dubai and landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. A video shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) showed the squad exiting the plane.

AFP reported excited crowds, held back by officers, cheered and shouted the name of skipper Babar Azam.

The Press Trust of India said this is Pakistan’s first visit to the neighbouring country in seven years. The Green Shirts previously traveled to India in 2016 for the T20 world cup.

The Indian government had on Monday issued visas for the Pakistan squad after multiple delays. The development came after the PCB wrote a letter to the International Cricket Council expressing concerns over the visa issue.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place from Oct 5 to Nov 19 in India. Pakistan’s opening match in the tournament is set for Oct 6 against the Netherlands in Hyderabad, while the highly anticipated match against arch-rivals India will take place in Ahmedabad on Oct 14.

The national team will play two warm-up matches — against New Zealand on Sept 29 and Australia on Oct 3. Earlier, the team was scheduled to leave for Dubai on Sept 25 and stay there for two days.

The 15-member squad for the mega tournament was announced last week by Cricket Chief Selector Inzamamul Haq. It notably includes bowler Hasan Ali, and excludes star pacer Naseem Shah, who was injured in the Asia Cup.

Other notable exclusions are bowlers Faheem Ashraf, who was part of the Asia Cup squad, and Mohammad Hasnain.

Squad:
Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan (vice-captain), Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imamul Haq, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, (wicketkeeper) Mohammad Wasim, Agha Salman, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usama Mir
